Microsoft: Our strategy with Silverlight has shifted. HTML5 is a priority instead.
Microsoft: Our strategy with Silverlight has shifted At Microsoft’s Professional Developers Conference (PDC) this week, the future of Silverlight is one topic that has gotten short shrift. There have been no sessions about Silverlight 5 and only one mention of Silverlight in the kick-off keynote. But there were plenty of mentions of HTML 5 and Microsoft’s commitment to that technology, not only in the next version of its Internet Explorer browser, but also as the glue “facilitating a level of independence ......

Schema Compare Options are for comparison between Project and Database
If you plan to compare a database project to a target database on a recurring basis, you can add the schema comparison to your database project. You can then re-compare the schemas by re-opening that comparison. By saving a schema comparison, you save connection information, session-specific options, and values for SQLCMD variables. Results are not saved, and they will be re-generated when you open the .scmp file for the saved schema comparison. To set this feature, go to "How to: Compare Database ......

Working with hierarchyid Data in SQL Server 2008 R2
Managing a Tree Using hierarchyid ---------------------------... Although a hierarchyid column does not necessarily represent a tree, an application can easily ensure that it does. When generating new values, do one of the following: Keep track of the last child number in the parent row. Compute the last child. Doing this efficiently requires a breadth-first index. Enforce uniqueness by creating a unique index on the column, perhaps as part of a clustering ......

Mastering Debugging in Visual Studio 2010
In the software development life cycle, testing and defect fixing take more time than actually code writing. In general, debugging is a process of finding out defects in the program and fixing them. Defect fixing comes after the debugging, or you can say they are co-related. When you have some defects in your code, first of all you need to identify the root cause of the defect, which is called the debugging. When you have the root cause, you can fix the defect to make the program behavior as expected. ......

5 Stored Procedures Optimization Tips
5 Stored Procedures Optimization Tips 1. Use stored procedures instead of heavy-duty queries. This can reduce network traffic as your client will send to the server only the stored procedure name (perhaps with some parameters) instead of all the text from a large heavy-duty query. Stored procedures can be used to enhance security as well. For example, you can give the users permission to execute the stored procedure to work with restricted sets of columns and data. 2. What's the difference between datasets and the entity framework?
It seems like typed datasets provide the same type of object layout as the entity framework. What's the difference and why should I use one or the other? We'll start at the fundamental difference: DataSets give you a basic in-memory database that you can query and fill from a data source such as a database. Queries against datasets are executed against in-memory data. Entity Framework gives you a translation layer that translates LINQ queries to your database's SQL dialect. Queries against the EF ......
