I’ve had this conversation a ton of times with my SharePoint buddies what makes a good recruiter?  I have blogged about absolutely abhorring recruiters in general.  I don’t hate all recruiters.  You can’t use the qualifier “All” for anything, like one of my math teacher’s Mrs. Wildermuth taught me in 10th grade.  So which recruiters do I love and which ones do I absolutely never want to interact with again in my life?  So here are ramblings on my thoughts to this subject.

First off don’t start off asking me if I hate my job.  I am sick of people asking me if I hate my job.  Don’t ask me what it would take to come over to your establishment either that just irritates me even more than asking me about my job hatred.  Also, please stop emailing me that we were at the same event but never connected.  Data mining is not cool.  I don’t go out and steal your information and then email you with random annoying job information, so please stop starting your emails to me with the same information.  Oh yeah and please stop sending me 20 job listing a day in an obvious mail merge format with only my name changed.  These are definitely number one on my all time irritation list, but let’s look into what I like in some recruiters.

Obviously, I have a job, so I had to deal with some form of recruiter.  In some ways I am a recruiter, because the SharePoint Community is one big networking hub.  In my life I deal with a lot of people, because I’m not just out there I’m way smack dab in the middle of whatever there is.  I have been to at least 65 user groups and events meeting all kinds of human beings.  I know I’ve been to over that many user group meetings in general.  I am a user group addict.  Sometimes a recruiter comes up to me and starts a conversation with me.  Who are you?  Where do you live?  What do you like to do?  These are the types of recruiters that I would like to talk to in life.  I want a conversation I want to feel special just like the rest of you guys.  I don’t want to feel like a notch on someone’s belt. 

So basically what am I saying in this blog post exactly?  I hate recruiters who treat me like a number or a commission and I love recruiters who treat me like a person.  Also, I am sick of recruiters who don’t know what they are talking about when they are posting job offers.  So if you want to try and recruit someone out there in the community remember this piece of advice treat the person you are recruiting like another human being and do your homework.  As usual the two people who read my blog thank you so much.  I hope that everyone has a good weekend.

Hi Becky,

I had find that out of 10 3 are the good one. I am in Sydney and i am sick of recruiter calling to me at my work place.They are smart ass they check my profile in linkedin and get my work place. Then they get my work phone number and give me a call at my desk. Which is very much annoying.

Well said. I have had a bit of a personal campaign against annoying recruiters for quite some time now. I even tried to get a SharePoint / IT Recruitment manifesto off the ground (but it didn't get very far!)

There are a lot of tactics that I hate about recruiters. Some of my personal favourites are:

- Are there any companies you DON'T want me to call on your behalf that you are already talking to? <- as if I am going to fall for that. This is just scouting for more connections for them to phone

- What rates WOULD you be looking at IF you WERE looking. <- I will discuss rates at the appropriate time that we are talking about a real job. Rates depend on many things: Location, Work level, length of contract, interest, organisation, etc

- URGENT- NEED TO START IMMEDIATELY <- I don't care if a role is urgent. I am either available and interested or I am not. If a role is urgent, then I probably don't want to go into the urgent mess the client is in anyway!! I'd rather a client that was thinking and planning and preparing.

- Do you know any other SharePoint Consultants who might be interested? <- I will give my friends and colleagues YOUR details and THEY can call YOU if they are interested.

Ok... that is my rant over.

I am an IT professional and unfortunately I have recruiters calling me into the office quite a bit seeing my profile on LinkedIn.
What I do is simply hang up with out even saying 'Hi'. Is it rude ? For sure yes it is, but I don't think that it's any more rude that someone calling me into the office without even bothering to ask for permission at the first place.

To my opinion head hunters in their efforts to cash in the placement fees should have a bit of decency and some very basic respect to some one else privacy.
