With the recent announcement of WSS/MOSS SP1 and AJAX support, I decided to relook at the Visual Studio 2008 integration again.  Sure enough I was surprised to find that Jan Tielens has been working on making it easy once again to develop web parts using templates.

Smart Templates has been put up on CodePlex in order to create more SharePoint project types than are currently available.  This includes only Web Parts at the current time.

The web part template allows you to do the following:
  • Create web part code
  • Generate the WSP
  • Generate Setup project for deployment
Future plans include:
  • Event Handler
  • Smart Parts (User Controls Web Parts)
  • Application Page Project
It's been a savior as one of the things holding me back from Visual Studio 2008 was SharePoint templates.  Now if they can hurry up on BizTalk... Posted on Thursday, December 13, 2007 4:47 PM Microsoft , SharePoint , C# | Back to top

The smarttemplates page says this:
"If you are a coordinator or developer on this project, please sign in to access the project."

Can I get the smart templates anywhere else?

Stick to usability standards and leave the underline style for links. Your post was useless to me until I accidentaly moused over the word "Smart templates" in the second paragraph to discover it was a link.

If you want to use the http://www.codeplex.com/smarttemplates with VB.NET you have to download this Zip-File: http://www.codeplex.com/smarttemplates/WorkItem/AttachmentDownload.ashx?WorkItemId=968&FileAttachmentId=663

The work item “VB.NET version of the templates
” says:

This ZIP file contains the VB.NET version of the project template. Copy this file in your “Visual Studio 2008\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Basic” folder.
