Over the past week, it was announced that the ALT.NET Mailing list was changing its name.  David Laribee asked for suggestions a while ago for suggestions on how to best split up the ALT.NET mailing list to get it more focused.  The idea was to get each list more focused such as one for leadership, one for Q&A and one for peer review.

Over the weekend, the ALTNETCONF mailing list was changed to CLI_DEV.  Since that time, there has been a backlash against the name change for the fear that the group may lose its focus as it is no longer associated with the ALT.NET name.

The reason given by Scott Bellware for the name change is the following:

The name change was undertaken because the content of this forum has out-grown the ALT.NET Conference and has been settling down into a good source of general discussions on software development with the CLI and it's immediate surroundings.

I'd have to agree with Scott about this.  It has long since morphed from organizing ALT.NET conferences and been refactored into a general discussion list about development tools, development methodologies, etc.  I've been afraid for quite some time about the group losing that core focus.  Now, with the name change, it has now been refactored into more of an appropriate name as it's not always about ALT.NET.  Do I agree with the name?  Well, it's a better one, but time will tell.  I would have liked a more tool focused and methodology focused group name, but it is what it is.  Either way, this will not deter me from the group, nor will I hope it will to you as well.

In the mean time, others have created a new ALT.NET mailing lists called ALTDOTNET on Yahoo Groups and ALTNET on Google Groups.  It's my hope that including these two lists in addition to the CLI_DEV will help the community grow and learn and all the things that I love the list for.  Let's hope that it does!

As always, the local communities continue to thrive such as our DC ALT.NET! Posted on Thursday, December 27, 2007 5:08 PM User Groups , ALT.NET | Back to top

To me the name change really has more to do with "Don't worry about ALT.NET, we'll think about that ourselves and get back to you". The new list though definitely has potential.
