I first came across PERL (Practical Extraction and Report Language) some 20 years ago. This language is still going strong and is available across a wide variety of platforms, not just Unix.

As http://www.perl.org/books/library.html there are some excellent on-line books.

Some such as Impatient Perl http://blob.perl.org/books/impatient-perl/iperl.pdf can be downloaded for free.

Also Modern Perl http://www.onyxneon.com/books/modern_perl/index.html

Also Extreme Perl at http://www.extremeperl.org/bk/home

Also Practical Mod Perl from http://www.modperlbook.org/pdf/index.html

Download links for Perl are at http://www.perl.org/get.html
