Kudos to Will Strohl for the countless hours he put in to organize the Day of DotNetNuke held in Tampa, FL today. Thanks to the sponsors, speakers and volunteers who made the day a huge success. The official count for the day verified by Microsoft host Joe Healy was 138. Joe was a great host making everyone comfortable and he also was one of the speakers. Yes, Microsoft does love DotNetNuke! Joe would make a great WROX salesperson as he was trying to sell the WROX Professional DotNetNuke 5 book that ...

There have been a couple of builds already for the new version 5.1 of DotNetNuke. On the DotNetNuke site, there is even a thread for users to discuss any problems they are having with the builds and they are encouraged to log their problems or suggestions on their Gemini site. The current build is 364 and there's already changes from the previous build. For example, here's the new Admin Settings: One change from the previous build is that Google Analytics is now located here. You could find this ...

Here's what the upgrade has to offer: What's New in 04.09.04 Major Highlights Fixed a major module caching issue which resulted in empty content for webcrawlers Improved performance of ...

So I just spent an hour attending the DotNetNuke Corporation Webinar entitled DotNetNuke Demonstration. Needless to say, I'm a fan of DotNetNuke and I can't get enough knowledge of the product. Nik began the session by defining what the product DotNetNuke is and how easy it was to design a site. He then gave a brief explanation of the community and professional version of DotNetNuke. Next, he spoke briefly of the technology used which consisted of DotNetNuke, ASP.NET, .NET. IIS, a Windows Server ...

There are two current blogs on the DNN site that is worth looking at to stay current on DotNetNuke news. One is from Scott Willhite and it includes a good outline from a recent team meeting. C4C in Kansas City was, once again, an incredible event. There were about 8 charities and probably about 30 developers / designers. We even had our own film crew from KC VideoCore, there to document the event and record the “ninjas” at work. I had the privilege of helping the Focus North America team building an aggregate data interface for personal donation campaigns on the Focus North America Site. The experience taught me, first and foremost, that Joomla is my enemy, but even enemies can work ...

SO I finally took the plunge and upgraded to DotNetNuke 5.00.01 beta on my live website. Having create a staging site and then tested the upgrade in a protected environment, I discovered a few things had changed since version 4.9: Native jQuery support - YEEEESSS!!! A half-decent Javascript framework has been packed in - notice how the FancyZoom stuf on the portfolio page still works thanks to a great bit of code here; New container/skin architecture that inherits from the improved and re-organised ...

I’m trying to put together the list of upcoming code camps in the South East region. The plan is for this to be periodically (probably quarterly) updated so, if you are hosting a code camp (or know someone who is) in the South East, please let me know the date and website so I can include it in the list. (I’m also using this list to plan my speaking schedule, so if I don’t know about your code camp I can’t determine if it will fit my schedule.) I only know of a few, so if you know of others please ...
Florida has a very active developer community. The biggest problem we seem to have is that all of these different groups usually don't know about each and there hasn't been a "centralized clearinghouse" listing all of the technical communities. Joe Healy, one of our Florida Microsoft Developer Evangelists, maintains a list and one-page flyers for each of the main areas in Florida. I think the eventual plan is that Joe will be updating his site to take advantage of the newer version of Live Maps and ...

There were over 500 registered before the event and there several walk on people who just showed up. The event took place at Seminole Community College in Sanford, ...

First of all, let's admit that the biggest fear we all have when using a computer is a working computer. Let's eliminate any computer problems and go right to it. Deleting something and then later realizing that you didn't want to delete it. Like a page or module when using DotNetNuke. If you are an administrator of your DotNetNuke site, you can go to to Admin->Recycle Bin to do this. Over on the DotNetNuke site, you can view some of the help that they have there for this. Have you noticed the tiny graphic image aside of your address bar when you load up your DotNetNuke site in your browser that looks like this? By default, you'll have a file called favicon.ico located in your folder where you installed DotNetNuke. Many developers have learned how to change this ico file to another image that identifies your website and it's fairly easy to do. A favicon is seen by the browser aside of your URL. It's only 16x16 pixel square icon. Once you find the favicon.ico file in ...
As I travel around speaking at Code Camps and talking to DotNetNuke users, it amazes me as to what version of DotNetNuke they are running their web portal on. With DotNetNuke version 5 being the future of DotNetNuke, there are many installs that are still running on version 3 and early versions of 4. I took the time to review the documented issues of past versions from the DotNetNuke site and in the future I plan on directing people to that site so they can see why they should upgrade to more current ...
In this issue: Michael Washington, Laurent Bugnion, Andy Beaulieu, and Dave Campbell. From SilverlightCream.com: Silverlight Gantt Chart Michael Washington sent me a preview of this Gantt chart last week and it's very cool... and not so much that it's a Gantt chart necessarily, but the visualization and data representation, not to mention he gave up the source :) Simulating IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem in Silverlight (part 1) Laurent Bugnion has part 1 of a two-parter on simulating IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem ...

The journey started seven months ago when I was asked by Wrox if I was interested or if I knew someone that was interested in writing the new DotNetNuke5 book. At that time, I put together an all Florida team with the exception of DotNetNuke founder Shaun Walker. The team consisted of Darrell Hardy, Stan Schultes, and Ryan Morgan. Everyone was committed to the writing of the book and all are extremely knowledgeable. We all have been speaking together at code camps in the Florida area about DotNetNuke. ...

I arrived in South Florida Friday night after a long drive from Orlando, FL. More specifically it was Friday night traffic, left later than I wanted to, got lost, drove 230 miles, but arrived safely. Got a good night sleep and woke up early today for my presentation at the South Florida Code Camp. Will Strohl, ODUG President, arrived early to setup his video equipment to live stream the DotNetNuke track. You should be able to see all the presentations soon on the ODUG site. I just received an email that there are 72 sessions for this code camp and registrations should break 700. Several years ago, I spoke at this code camp in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and the numbers were very impressive. I remember code camps being small and very intimate but the need for knowledge is there and many people come out for them in recent years. I look forward to seeing the co-authors for the new DotNetNuke version 5 book. Darrell Hardy, Ryan Morgan, and Stan Schultes will be presenting at the ...

I love the new version of IIS. One of the great elements of Server 2008 is that it has IIS7 installed. A great aspect of the new IIS is that you can now run very common applications (wordpress, and photo gallery) on Windows. These applications are PHP based and typically are hosted on Linux Servers. IIS 7 allows for you to host these applications on Windows with some great performance A new tool from Microsoft allows you to install all of these applications with little or no configuration. Yes, I'll admit, I'm a sucker when a new windows operating system comes out. After all, I come from the MS DOS era and witnessed the series of Windows products like version 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 3.1 aka NT, 3.11, 3.5, 95 (remember the lines at the store!), 4.0, 98, 2000, XP, Vista and now 7! After the installation, I quickly noticed how fast the install was. Now, I know this is a BETA version and I was wondering if this was stripped on purpose without the extras loaded in a final copy for this quick install. ...
