One of my dreams is going to come true: Since the very first time I attended MIX in 2006, I have wanted to talk there. MIX has a very special meaning for me. It is in the Venetian conference rooms that I heard about Windows Presentation Foundation and what would later become Silverlight. It is there that me and my two colleagues Andreas and James decided that we wanted WPF for the project we had just started at Siemens. A decision that was definitely the right one, from a technical point of view ...
Happy New Year everyone, from SilverlightCream! I hadn't decided if I was going to do a retrospective post this year, I've done a couple, and if you haven't read them, they shouldn't be hard to find on my blog :) Going through my blog list, however, I came across a year-ender by Chris Alcock of "The Morning Brew", and taking his lead, I thought I'd put out some metrics on SilverlightCream. I have a list of 210 blogs I scan every day. This is an ever-growing list. As someone submits something to the ...

Now that the book is finished writing, reality is catching up with me and I am finally able to work on the backlog of ideas and projects that has accumulated in the last months. Time to give an update of stuff I do or will do soon.

As I've mentioned in recent posts such as here, here and here, I've been very interested in Domain Specific Languages (DSLs), especially with regards to F# and the DLR as well. I recently re-listened to Software Engineering Radio Episode 52 with Obie Fernandez discussing DSLs in Ruby. One of the things that attracted me to Ruby for this was the flexibility of the syntax for closures, mixins, etc. Anyhow, it's a good listen and if you're new to the subject, you should give it a go. Also, there is ...

The Microsoft MIX08 conference is going on this week and even though I didn't go this year (maybe next year or ReMix) there are enough people blogging about what's happening at the conference that you can still keep up with most of it. There were a lot of big announcements during the keynote and the first day of the conference, including the first public beta of Internet Explorer 8. This release is primarily focused on web developers and designers to give them as much time as possible to validate ...

So, day 1 is over. I met so many people and had so many great talks that I am, again, really happy to be there. Quite tired too, though, so I need a shower and then it's out for dinner. Tonight also features a party at Tao, a club into the Venetian. Another great occasion to network, I just hope the music won't be too loud (am I getting old or what) because when I am tired and its loud, it's harder to understand the English language :) but I am sure I will be fine. I was msn'ing with Derek, imploring him to tell me how HORRIBLE Mix08 was and how I should thank the Good Lord that I didn't book days off to go down, and what a horrible waste of time and money it was and I was FAR better being in Winnipeg in March in freezing weather. We'll lets hope the rest of this week does not go like this. I am on my way to Las Vegas to for MIX08 and my 12:15 AA flight from Newark was canceled when I got here. New flight time is 4:45 with a winter storm looming off to the west and severe weather heading up from the south. <sigh> Update: Spoke too soon. Flight to DFW is now delayed until 6pm, which means I miss my connecting flight to Vegas (which of course is the last one of the day). I am now rebooked on a flight to Chicago O'Hare ...
We're leaving today for Serfaus, Austria, where we're going to spend the next week skiing. It's the 3rd time we go there, and it's been great every time. The ski school there is amazing, and the station is really very family-friendly. For me, it's also interesting because the ski tracks range from very easy to very hard, so you cannot get bored. Like spoon feeding water to a man who has walked the desert for more than a year, news about IE8 has been slow to come, but Chris Wilson and Dean Hachamovitch cracked open the flood gates a bit today by announcing that IE8 has been able to pass the Acid2 test (yay!!!). For developers this represents a huge step forward for IE and is hopefully the beginning of it coming more into line with the other more standards compliant browsers out there. My 27-mile commute this morning took an hour, so I listened to both of the current ones. Good stuff... reminded me how much fun MIX07 was.

Today was MIX's last day, and it's almost painful to have to leave. I can't believe how fast it went, how packed with information it was, and how many great people I had the chance to meet. To all of you, I want to say thanks for the great time I spent here. The organization was, as usual, spotless. Now I have so much information to process and sort, this will keep me busy for a long time... Oh how I hope to make it to MIX08 ;-) Extending the Browser Programming Model with Silverlight If I had to ...
