With a big dose of reality, I walked into this place this morning and found out "yeah, I really do write .NET web apps and MS Access for a living" :( ... but it pays the bills and I've gotten *way* used to eating 3 times a day :) MIX10 was great, although the buzz didn't seem as big as MIX09, and I'm not sure why. It also seemed like a different crowd and other folks I talked to agreed with that. Of course now I can outwardly admit that the "Windows Phone 7 Series" is programmed with Silverlight ...
In Silverlight 3 and 4, it is possible to create a Silverlight application and to have the user install it on the desktop (aka Out Of the Browser OOB). This is a great way to offer a “light desktop” experience, where the application can be started from a shortcut on the desktop or the Start menu, but running on Silverlight so that you don’t need the full .NET framework, and can run it on PC and Mac as you like. You can even use the application when the PC is offline, which is not possible with an ...
This year has been a pretty amazing year. A few weeks ago, I was writing about my first year at IdentityMine. A little more than one year ago I was closing the Siemens book (after around 13 years of working into Building Automation, but always from a software engineer perspective) and started the IdentityMine chapter of my life :). As I mention in the post in question, this first year was a very interesting and also challenging year. Interesting because I got to work with some of the best creative ...
I was asked a little while back to pull together the best training resources for .NET development to feed into a MSDN UK site. I thought it would be useful to share here as well. By no means everything is listed but sometimes less is more :-). Enjoy: Top Tip: Watch out – these are sometimes big downloads. For instance I just downloaded a high def PDC2009 session at 600MB! I recommend you check out Free Download Manager – it is a great open source tool for working with large files. Offline Training ...
Well people, it was an amazing keynote. Silverlight 4 beta was just presented by Scott Guthrie at the Professional Developer Conference 2009 in Los Angeles. As soon as Silverlight 3 was released a few months ago, the Silverlight team started working on new features to create what will be a really exciting release. Read the rest of this entry » ...
Tomorrow night I’ll be at RockNUG presenting LINQ to SQL. Yes, LINQ to SQL. Again. In the last 2 years I have presented LINQ to SQL numerous times at various user groups and code camps. Why do I keep getting asked to present LINQ to SQL? Isn’t LINQ to SQL dead? Answer: No. LINQ to SQL is not dead! This confusion all started back in October 2008 with a seemingly innocuous post on the ADO.NET team blog discussing the emphasis that Microsoft was going to put into the Entity Framework going forward. ...
First I'd like to congratulate all the returning MVPs, and all the new ones... fun awaits and I hope to see you all at the Summit! I'd particularly like to call out people I know that have just become Silverlight MVPS. Tim Heuer did a great post with links to everyone, so I won't repeat that. Bryant Likes -- wow... it's been a well-earned award all the way back to rolling that gear, Bryant :) Jeff Paries ... if you're not familiar with Jeff, you should be... Jeff is the animation master of Silverlight! ...
OK, I have wound down enough to get my thoughts together. First, let me just say how utterly impressed I was with the event. I can’t think of another conference that gives you so much for so little. This conference was on par with Mix09 and it was ~$100 a person! The content was top-notch as well. Tim Barcz’s talk on mocking, Phil Japikse’s talk on Patterns, Chris Patterson’s talk on Event Driven Architecture and Clint’s talk about starting a company (what little I could see from the hall since there ...
This podcast accompanies the August 12th, 2009 edition of the MSDN Flash newsletter. It includes an interview with Mike Ormond discussing the new stuff in ASP.NET 4.0 plus an opportunity to ask Mike “Which are you? MVC or WebForms?”. Other areas discussed in the intro section include the RTM of Windows 7, the UK launch event of Expression 3 and Silverlight 3 plus the results of the poll of how developers scored in the Joel test. P.S. Apologies on the delay in publishing this podcast – but I did have ...

I’d like to provide you with a SilverBullet™, a small snippet of Silverlight, a class or namespace hidden in the silverlight .NET framework, to help you out in times of need. It’s not to learn, but something to keep in your pocket. Just remember it’s there and you’re safe. Most often Silverlight applications take up the whole screen and the page that is hosting the application contains only one control. It is possible to split you application into smaller controls. This can be valuable when you are ...

If you are the minority who have been following my blog from the beginning you would know I am an avid practitioner and developer that centre on Microsoft SharePoint, and associated technologies. So some people may be thinking why write about Commerce Server? Is there any association between this and Microsoft Office SharePoint server (MOSS)? Well the answer is yes and no. In my earlier blog I briefly introduced Commerce Server, and this is hopefully the start of my series of articles introducing ...
Had a great time Wednesday night delivering a session on Azure and SQL Data Services at GL.NET. Admittedly I run over hugely but I enjoyed it and I much prefer lots of questions along the way. The venue is very good. The MessageLabs offices offer a pretty decent sized room, wireless internet and a good projector. Jimmy makes for a very friendly host and the folks that attend are equally good guys and as a bonus, the pub is near by :-) In summary, if you develop software using Microsoft.NET and you ...

The time was ripe for a new intro on my website www.galasoft.ch. Here it is below, posted for my blog’s readers. I hope that you find it entertaining.
