FileStream data type is a very important feature of SQL Server 2008 and gradually getting popular amongst developer for it’s feasibility. And in the past few days specially after “Configure SQL Server 2008 for File Stream” post. I received several feedbacks regarding the usage of FileStream with Ado.net and Frankly there is not much stuff available on Google for this topic. In this post, I will guide you to use FileStream Data type in Ado.net. But before we start make sure you have configure your ...

I was trying to get SQL Server 2008 express installed and every time I ran the installation program it kept coming up saying that my computer was failing the test that the computer required a restart. After a few restarts and the program still saying that my computer required a restart I came across this posting on the MSDN forums. I believe that my Logitech web cam has an issue with it's installation program since after each reboot the same entries keep appearing in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\C... ...

Well, from past two days I am working on SQL Server 2008 new feature called File Stream. In the period of SQL Server 2005 when we want to store some files to the database we can have that using varbinary(max) but that approach is not either smart nor popular amongst the developers. So, many developers like me wants to store images on any physical location and keep the file location in the table. But, that have issues too, what if somebody delete the files from physical location ? will file entries ...
Currently, by the time I am posting this stuff SQL Server 2008 is in CTP. And off course, it has several installation issues. For the very first time, when I sit for the installation of SQL Server 2008 Express believe me I run the setup up to four times. So let me share with you, you must need to have the following items installed on your system. Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributed .net Framework 3.5 SP 1 or .net Framework 3.5 SP 1 (Full Download) Power Shell 1.0 Without installing the above component, ...
After a long long struggle finally me and my team was able to run the Analysis Services reports on SQL Server 2008. We had a big trouble while installing the Analysis Extensions of MS Dynamics 2009 on SQL Server 2008. Moreover, 64-bit added to more troubles. While installing Analysis Extensions on a machine running SQL Server 2008, as soon as you check the checkbox for Analysis Extensions you would encounter an error SQL Server 2005 Analysis SP2 or higher required to continue the install. There are ...

While http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... outlines some limitations of SQL Server Express, there are some specifics that are missing for Reporting Services. One such example is what I discovered today while at a client that uses DB2 for its RDBMS. SSRS that comes with the Express Edition only supports creating reports against the local SQL Server data source. Be aware of this when considering SQL Server Express in your system design. http://www.microsoft.com/te... ...
Running Windows Vista 64 bit, Sql Server 2008 on a remote server. Using ASP.Net and the Report Viewer control on an asp.net page for a local report. Was also using IIS to host the web site instead of using the web server built into Visual Studio 2008. Searched and tried everything I could find on the net trying to fix this freaking error. On a whim (and because I didn't know what else to do and was trying everything I could think of) changed the IIS 7.0 app pool to the classic app pool. Angels came ...

I created my first technology blog back in July 2004 over on http://blogs.msdn.com/ericnel when I was an Application Architect inside Microsoft UK. At the time I had been with Microsoft 8 years, I was very focused on early adoption work with SQL Server 2005 and was looking for a broader way to help developers in the UK. A blog seemed to be a great way of doing this and I used it to share my learnings, thoughts, advice, best finds etc. throughout the beta of SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005. ...

For 2009, I've resolved to start participating and giving back to the technical Internet community. For years I've been searching (even before Google - gasp) for technical info online, and selfishly (or mercifully, depending on your point of view) withholding the bits I have to offer. As a brief introduction to me, I am one of those multi-hat types. Depending on the job, I spend anywhere from 30-70% of my time doing hands-on technical work (including coding, but also configuring all the knobs and ...

[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... The first public beta of BizTalk Server 2009 was released yesterday, and fulfils expectations by falling in line with the 2008 server and development stack, and offering a few functional extras. I've had a quick run through of it and made some initial notes below. The MSBuild integration is interesting although I haven't got a good grasp yet on whether it will replace custom MSBuild tasks to aid deployment; apparently it works nicely with TFS, but ...

Hosting Your Own Websites For years now I’ve been building our company websites on external hosting systems. The problem has always been that I have limited control over the hosting environment. During the past year my host has been webhost4life and they do a good job of providing services including DotNetNuke but my desire to host multiple websites made hosting in-house more and more attractive. I’ve accumulated 18 domain names from Network Solutions over the years and I really wanted to build sites ...
I've been struggling through a Team Foundation Server 2008 install with Sql Server 2008 over the weekend. It seems to be having an especially hard time with the SQL Server Reporting Services. After analyzing a few things, I determined that the configuration tool was having an issue due to some prior installations of software. The report urls were pointing to a SQL Express directory. I went about setting up the virtual directories manually. This required setting up an application pool, and I assigned ...

You can read more about it in Gert's blog post. SALUTE! Jim ...
Using Reflection and ADO.NET to create a dynamic Data Layer In this article I will discuss using object oriented techniques and built-in ADO.NET functions to create a data layer which will essentially figure out what values to put into stored procedure parameters, dynamically assign types in ADO.NET and c#, get values from a database and assign them to object properties, and write the code in such a way that you won't have to rewrite it anytime soon; even if you add new objects into your solution ...
They should have called it “Stockholm” instead of “Oslo”; they really should. “08”, pronounced “nollåtta”, or “jävla nollåtta” in the north of Sweden, is the nickname for Stockholmers (08 is the area code for Stockholm), so “PDC 08” would mean “PDC Stockholm” in Swedish. David Chappell Article As always, David Chappell has been following the development of “Oslo” and realted technologies from the early days. He has just had an article published on MSDN “Workflows, Services, and Models – A First Look ...

Last year I logged an issue on the connect site around deploying from BIDS and renamed databases. https://connect.microsoft.c... I got a couple of messages relating to this issue, one saying that it was being closed as it was a duplicate issue and then another one recently where it was updated to indicate that the issue has been fixed in SQL Server 2008. I think it is really great to get this sort of feedback that something is being done, unfortunately ...

I recently went to check the configuration of my SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services instance (which is a named instance called "SQL08") and it came up with a "connect" dialog and when I clicked on the "find" button I got an "invalid namespace" error. I found a few threads on the MSDN forums about this and eventually a Microsoft guy came up with a solution. The post at the end of this thread http://forums.microsoft.com... had the solution which worked for ...
I'll start this blog by posting something that bothered me for months until I found out that it was laaaazzzy stored procedure code. Have you ever looked at your SSIS packages in SSMS 2005 when connected to Integration Services only to find out that they are not in alphabetical order? How about when you are selecting a package from SQL Server when setting up a job in SQL Agent? It would help if the packages were ACTUALLY IN ORDER right? To fix this tomfoolery, go to the [msdb].[dbo].[sp_dts_listpa... ...

I have decided to continue my article on the SQL Server 2008 RTM exploration update 3 in form of a new post. I am up and running with the SQL Server 2008 with no issues. The SQL Server Configuration Manager is a nice replacement for Surface Area Configuration and SQL Browser and it needs little attention. I spent literally 2 minutes just glancing at the settings. Nothing much to change. Among the new things are SSMS enhancements like the built in ability to debug T-SQL be it a stored procedure or ...
When trying to install the Adventure Works 2008 sample database on my new SQL Server 2008 instance I very quickly got a message box about the installation failing with an error of 2738. For some reason this sounded familiar and sure enough a quick search turned up this post from Mitch (see: The error code is 2738) where he had the same error (with a different installer). It appears to be the same issue as the same fix worked for me and now I am up and running with the new sample database. Technorati ...
I am pleased to announce that the BIDS Helper team have just released v1.3 which is our first release with support for SQL Server 2008. With these release we have also improved our international support. All of the features in BIDS Helper still only display in English in their user interfaces. But in previous versions, some of the features of would not work at all in non-English versions of BIDS because of the way we were integrating into BIDS. This has now been fixed and all of the features of BIDS ...

The download for VS.NET 2008 SP1 is available now: http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... This should fix the issue with running BIDS for SQL Server 2008 and VS.NET 2008. I'm downloading just downloaded it - it's tiny at about 500Kb, I hope it's not one of those "web install" stubs as I am going to be disconnected for most of the day and It's going to be frustrating if the SP stops installing part way through. Update: As I suspected, the tiny file was just a web download, there is ...
Hello everyone, With SQL 2008 shipping late last week it was time to try my hands at this scenario. It worked great but with a few things to remember. Here is the lowdown. There are two way to go about in order to install TFS with SQL 2008 1) Fresh install, 2) Upgrade SQL. 1) Fresh Install I used Windows 2008 because this is going to be the prevalent OS to install on when people are going to start fresh or it most likely will. There was a little issue with that install when Windows 2008 RTM’ed back ...
