A couple of days ago I had the wonderful surprise to find a mention (and a link!) to MVVM Light on USAToday.com. The article talks about the new USA Today app available for Windows Phone 7. MVVM Light is mentioned as well as JSON.NET just after the high quality of the development tools is mentioned: “That same high bar for tools extends into the community as well. MVVM Light and JSON.Net were extremely useful moving past mundane tasks and instead getting to the business of building our app.” – Tim ...
I’ve released a new version of seatest which fixes some little bugs / flaws and also introduces global setup / teardowns. It can be found at http://code.google.com/p/se... I’ve found it really useful for the C based projects I’m working on. The only thing I think might be useful is some tools to help generate new tests / test fixtures / suites. In Visual studio I have both Visual Assist and Resharper which provide templating capabilities. But it might be nice to build my own custom tools specifically ...

All right this is a repeat, but it well worth you having the email I have recieved from those nice people at JetBrains. Following recent developments in the .NET decompiling tools market, JetBrains is happy to offer its own decompiler called dotPeek that brings a host of powerful ReSharper features to everyone, completely free of charge. You can download an early dotPeek build right now. dotPeek offers: Decompilation of .NET 1.0-4.0 assemblies to C# Code syntax highlighting and code insight features ...
Somehow it happens that my first ever blog post is at the same time as TechEd 2010 in ATL. Being occupied with work I didn’t have a chance to attend this enormous event this year, but wanting to learn more on new tools I am trying to keep up by reading your posts. Thank you for the news! Hopefully next year I will be an active participant ;) --- The first question you will ask me is why blogging now? Finally I decide to focus on my professional skills more and get up to speed with everything I missed ...
dotPeek is a new free .NET decompiler from JetBrains, the makers of a wide array of developer productivity tools: ReSharper, dotTrace, and dotCover for .NET developers plus tools for other languages You can download the beta from http://confluence.jetbrains... This looks like it will be a good replacement for Reflector which alas is no longer free. You will need to do an XCOPY installation. Remember it is an Alpha release but it does promise to be an ...

At http://www.ssmstoolspack.com/  there is SSMS Tools Pack which is an add-in for Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) 2005, 2008, 2008 R2, 2011 (Denali) CTP1 and their respective Express versions.

The setup has separate sections for SQL 2005, SQL2005 Express, SQl 2008 and even for SQL 2011.

At the UK Connected Systems User Group meeting yesterday we had a good session from Imran on Azure AppFabric. We ran out of evening before the end of the session, so I didn't get to raise this question, but it's a crucial point for me. The Service Bus exists to easily expose internal services to the outside world. It's an easy sell to tech guys, but I haven't yet worked with a client's security team who are open to the concept. I think the security guys have a good point: the status quo for exposing ...

With the recent demand to technologies that allow us to communicate better inside and outside our organization’s walls, comes the need to implement solutions like Microsoft Lync. Individuals are looking at expanding their skillset and therefore looking at training and certifications. Here are some resources that will help you prepare for the PRO: Microsoft Lync Server 2010, Administrator (70-665) Exam. Information for the Links in the Prep Guide come from TechNet Library and the info can be found ...
Lately, I have been taking some time to learn some new technologies. For me, the best way to learn a new technology is to jump head first into a project: Daily deal websites such as GroupOn, LivingSocial, DealFind, etc. have really taken off over the last 6 months. With so many sites out there, my inbox was being flooded with emails from all these daily deal websites. This seemed like it might be a fun project, so I set out to build a daily deal aggregator. First, I built a Windows Phone 7 app. I ...

Last weekend I went up to Iowa Code Camp in Cedar Rapids and had the opportunity to do two presentations, one on NuGet and one known as the Automation Tools Roundup. ICC is one of my favorite conferences every year. It is twice a year and I try to make it to at least one of them. The people that attend this conference really make it worth the money you spend in travel expenses. Definitely recommended. Automation Tools Roundup This is my favorite session to give because it requires crowd participation ...
I just finished delivering 4 sessions for www.sswug.org at the end of April 2011. Above is a screenshot that was taken inside of the studio. I posted a little while ago about how, with XNA and VB becoming a supported scenario, I was starting down the road to learning VB. Just a brief update on that. If you ever need to learn another language, having practical tasks is a huge benefit. Something I’ve been making use of is Project Euler. Writing the solutions in different ways to intentionally make use of certain syntax features has helped me both internalize them and understand them. As a by-product, I managed to hack together a VB Windows ...

I have found myself using more and more of the tools Red Gate software makes. They have proven (to me) to be effective and to the point. This time I am talking about SQL Source Control. Simple to use, simple to add a database to be under Change Control, which really is the goal. Don’t take me wrong, Visual Studio is a great tool, yet it is a developer’s tool. As a DBA or Database Developer (referring to an individual who codes T-SQL) we want to launch SQL Server Management Studio and be able to control ...
As Harry Hill might say, "I like Visual Studio. And I like Eclipse. But which one is better? Only one way to find out…" For a lot of people a lot of the time, the question is irrelevant. If you are doing Java development, you are going to pick Eclipse, and for .NET development you are going to pick Visual Studio. But both IDEs are extensible, and have communities providing extensions for other languages, so if you are using another language it might not be so clear cut. And if you are a language ...

If you have the latest version of the Visual Studio 2010 extension VSCommands you can give your solutions friendly names that display in the window’s title bar. This is nice when you are working in different branches, so that you can differentiate which solution you are actually looking at. I wrote the following regex to put the Branch Name after the Solution name, so for example if you have the client solution open in both Dev and Release, one will be called “Client.sln – Dev” and the other “Client.sln ...

In this post I want to highlight how easy it is starting a MVC Project using NuGet and deploy it to AppHarbor. It is not much but it is fun. First you need to install Visual Studio 2010. Then, go to Tools –> Extension Manager. From the Online Galery install NuGet ( if you don’t already have it ). Make sure you also have ASP.NET MVC3 installed. Create a new MVC 3 Project. Add a Class Library project to the solution. Since you’ve added NuGet you have access to the Package Manager Console. I’m sure ...
I haven’t been able to get my work email syncing with my Samsung Focus since I started the new gig due to some certificate issues. When I try to connect, I’m just told there’s a problem with the certificate. The real underlying issue is that the certificate for my work email isn’t installed on my WP7 device. Unfortunately, this ends up being a manual task that you have to perform, but its not a difficult one once you know what to do. Jerome Laban’s blog post talks about the root cause of the issue: ...

My team was facing acute errors just about the delivery time. We approached MS India, freelancers, topic expects but so solution. In our case, I found out that this was a local environment issue rather than a generic issue which is why no one had any solution. HTML5 introduces markup-level functionality for rich graphics, animation and web multimedia. It also supports a richer web application functionality and extends the client capabilities with local storage. Many pundits see it as the next generation web - web 3.0 if you like - and an open standard replacement for propriety plug-ins, Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash. But, for all its new features, HTML5 is still only the end product. This article looks at HTML5 from the web programmer's point of ...
MIX 11 happened this past week and I’m still trying to find and catch up on all the announcements changes that came from that. It looks like we can now use XNA on the web via Silverlight (and am I reading that we can do 3d?). We can now use Silverlight in our XNA projects with Windows Phone 7 (yay for having an easy way to make UI’s in XNA now!). And I’m still searching around to see if there were any other big news. The Silverlight + XNA news is pretty big because that opens up a lot of new game ...

It appears that my work in the community and the nominations received from others has secured my status as an MVP for a second year. Thank you all for the award and thank you everyone (including Microsoft) for valuing my contributions to the community. I noticed last year I did quite a bit of travelling and talks. After the excellent Azure news from MIX 11 yesterday, I thought now would be the best time to release a brand new article about how you can get started with Azure and Windows Phone 7. Intro I’m sure by now you have heard of Windows Azure. Windows Azure Platform is thus classified ...

I am very excited to help share this news with you today! I feel as excited today as I was when Windows Phone 7 developer story was revealed at MIX10 last year. There was not a disclosure or showing of any new end-user features. There is a commitment to delivering the next update later this year as a free updates ...

Ahhh, the beauty of having Windows Live Writer on the mac again, I love it. So when I bought this machine, I said I would never run Boot Camp, Parallels, or Fusion on it because it only has 2GB of ram that is not upgradeable and who can run a VM with under a 1GB ram dedicated? Well the answer is Windows 7 Starter Edition. How did I come to that conclusion, trial and error. We are prepping for a big event at TechEd 2011 (the announcement will be coming soon) and I needed Windows Live Writer on my ...

It seems odd that in 2011 there is no such thing as a requirements capture language. Martin Fowler describes this as the yawning crevice of doom in software - http://martinfowler.com/bli... , http://www.infoq.com/news/2... When I am building code it is ludicrous that I need to read a perpetually changing 50 page Word document or Excel spreadsheet, or worse a set of UML diagrams that are totally disconnected from reality.
