Had an interesting Twitter convo today about WP7 development. Question was raised on how to use a WP7 device as the deployment target from within VS.NET. Thinking that this would be an *obvious* question, I replied that you need to set the right value in one of the drop lists in the IDE… I did this, hooked up my device, then tried to run my app, just as a final test that it was as easy as I thought it would be. It wasn’t. So first, your phone can’t be locked, so make sure you unlock it. Also, don’t ...
I started tweeting a list of “protips” (or whatever you want to call that) related to the Twitter for Windows Phone 7 application. Since I worked as integrator on this app, my tasks involved integrating design assets in all screens, and so I had an insider view on all the screens (and that is really a LOT of screens :) Seeing some comments about the app made me understand that most users out there don’t realize how rich the application is, and how many features are available. So without further ado, ...

Out with friends tonight, they wanted to see my WP7 device. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really show them anything because my phone’s data connectivity disappeared. With my data connection on my cellular settings turned on, and a 3G symbol visible, I couldn’t connect! Seeing that we were at Boston Pizza, and they provide wi-fi, I get the password and try to connect. While I was able to connect to the wi-fi network, there was no place to actually put the pass code in! So no dice for data. I come home, ...

I blogged last week about my experiences so far with my Samsung Focus on the Rogers network (phone is unlocked and branded AT&T). So far, so good, except for MMS – Multimedia messaging. In fact, nobody who’s using an unlocked Focus on a different network seems to be able to get this working. My buddy Colin did some digging and even contacted Samsung’s support account on Twitter. Here’s the horrendous response: Over at WPCentral they have an article talking about this issue, and they mention that ...
Good news emerging from the tech rumour mill! It seems that the next big WP7 OS update will be coming sooner than later – read: January. It’s also going to be “massive”, and speculation is that it will include copy/paste, custom ringtones, and multi-tasking support, among other things. Twitter comments from those that have seen it (or have some inside info on it…not really sure who Chris Walshie is, but anyway…) have included MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years. Let’s just say, they ...

I blogged a while back about a WP7 hack that was making the rounds showing how to turn your phone into a mass-storage device (so like a USB drive basically). I got around to try it today, and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. I finally got around tonight to getting my sim card from Rogers (Canadian 3G cellular telco)*. I bought my Focus unlocked from Expansys, so I get to avoid the annoyance that is cellular contracts. So here are some things you need to know about setting up your unlocked phone with a different provider, specifically (obviously) Rogers: You will require to hard-reset your phone. After putting in the SIM card, I looked *everywhere* for a setting that would let my device see my SIM card. No dice, displayed ...

It’s hard to believe that I just finished my 100th blog post in the past year related to Microsoft.NET Technology. [UPDATE Nov 25/2010] So last night I plugged my phone into my pc to charge, which brought up the Zune software. I wanted a few more apps, so I downloaded them from there. Phone synched, and I went to try my apps. I thought “What the hell”, and tried to access an app on the marketplace. This time I didn’t get the “This item is not available from the Marketplace catalogue”, I got some message about an error and a hex value. I tried to access an app again to see if I’d still get the error message and…*POOF*…I ...

Windows Phone 7 will be the 3rd important smartphone platform on the market (in my personal opinion) and one goal of SharpBox was and is to support the big three, so the library has to be adapt for the following systems: iOS on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch based on MonoTouch Windows Phone 7 based on WP7 SDK Android on phones and tabs based on MonoDroid The iOS support was part of the library since version 1.0.1. I just got my first WP7 (an LG Quantum) about ten hours ago. Since then I’ve explored it, played games on it, registered it as a dev phone, deployed my project that’s nearest to completion and tested that, taken some pictures, transferred some essential albums to it, downloaded some apps and some trials, and setup my twitter account and several email accounts both standard and custom. Between one thing and another, I never had a chance to use an actual phone until now. So I’ve been running on pure ...

My buddy Shane Sholdice tweeted an Engadget article revealing that the new Samsung Focus WP7 device does support USB tethering, a feature that was reported missing from the WP7 devices. The article references an article on MobilityDigest.com that takes you through step by step how to enable this. However, a word of warning: these instructions seem to *only* work with phones hooked up to the AT&T network. The author was given the username and password for AT&T tethering, which suggests that ...

This FAQ article came across my Twitter stream this afternoon. It’s related to the Samsung Focus, but this line suggests its a broad design feature of WP7 devices: Windows Phone 7 does not support freely swapping microSD Card in and out. ORLY!? Not only that but… Many commercially available retail microSD cards are not approved for use in Windows Phone 7. Use of unapproved cards may cause performance degradation or device instability including unexpected reset and loss of user data. A microSD card ...

I had a whole blog post written up on the evils of Telus and how the “largest 3G network in Canada” doesn’t even run through two of the central provinces – Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Then I found out that they actually are 3G in SK and have the Windows Phone 7 devices listed as “coming soon”, so it would seem that Manitoba is the only province left out. Fine. Whatever. But that still leaves us with an interesting landscape here in Canada. We have three carriers committed to WP7 devices at launch: ...

The release of the recent update to the Xbox 360’s dashboard has caused quite a commotion among the Xbox LIVE Indie Games (“XBLIG”) community. The primary reasons for this have been a negative response to various changes that have occurred in regards to XBLIG’s look and presence on the Xbox. Unfortunately, what was an “Indie Developers Unhappy With Dashboard Changes” story has been slowly corrupted into a “Microsoft Wants To Kill XBLIG” story. I undoubtedly played a part in that with my post here ...
I have been playing with the Windows Phone 7 Toolkit all day long (Saturday), all while reading Charles Petzold’s eBook brought to us for free by Microsoft Press.
