One of the items I got hit with in my initial WP7 app rejection was that my “Pin-To-Start image didn’t match with the rest of the icons”. Hmm, come to think of it I never did test that. So I tried it out. To pin an app, you hold down until you get the menu below, then you pin it to the start screen. After I did this, I saw a big blue box where my app logo should have gone. So that’s what they were talking about. Now, my image is set in my project’s properties page… …but maybe because I was messing ...

With year end approaching fast, I thought I'd make a shortlist of upcoming technologies that will be popular in 2011. Nintendo 3DS - Handheld gaming device with 3D effects without the need for 3D glasses. Windows Phone 7 - Recently released WP7 will likely gain increasing mobile phone market share in 2011. Internet enabled TV - TVs with integrated internet access, app store for apps built specifically to run on full sized screen TVs ...

This is another of those posts taken from the wanderings of a mind put in neutral too long... maybe I need to get back to work :) Since my previous phone was a razor, I've not had the opportunity or need to browse 'app stores' to view all the fun things you can spend your hard-earned pocket change on... like a fart machine... why back in my day, a metal washer with a rubberband through it wound up tight and anchored on both ends by a loop of a heavy paperclip worked pretty good! Or as I noted the ...

While I'm on the subject of WP7 applications, let me describe one of my favorites... and it comes on the device when you get it. The WP7 app market is going to be hot (IMHO), and as a developer, you want to get good reviews. Or said another way, you don''t need bad reviews. A Silverlight MVP friend of mine, René Schulte, is deeply involved in graphics work and has released to the marketplace a photo manipulation application called "Pictures Lab". You can see his excellent discussion, pictures, and explanation on his blog. Read on to see my personal review of the app ...

After I posted my last blog post, Ralph Squillace responded with a link that everyone that is doing OData/WP7 development should be aware of. 2 days before I posted my Data/WP7 post, Microsoft's Mike Flasco posted this regarding the changes that are coming in the RTM version of the Windows Phone 7 library. The current WP7 phone platform is missing some core types, types that data service client LINQ provider requires to function properly. The CTP that is currently available (and which my example ...

It's been so long since I posted on the blog that doing it now makes me a bit feel a bit weird. In my defense, i've been quite busy these past months: I left my previous company, got married, moved to a new country, started work for a cool company here... in this order :) More recently I've been working on a small app for Windows Phone 7 and one of the app's needs is some (fancy) charts...you know, the bar/pie/gauge kind. While there are some nice control libraries out there for bar and pie charts, ...
With the upcoming announcements around Windows Phone 7, I thought now would be a good time to dive into the platform and see what its all about. For those thinking that writing apps for the WP7 platform would be like writing apps for any other platform, prepare for a reality check (unless you’ve written XNA apps for the XBOX Live marketplace…I’m assuming the process is somewhat similar). A key aspect of the WP7 experience is the Marketplace – a Microsoft controlled gateway to getting your mobile ...

In the past I’ve used things like ANTS performance profiler to identify performance bottlenecks and to optimize my applications performance. It was always a great way to give an application that final boost that makes it run faster/slicker than my competitor. Now that I’m developing for the WP7 series, I wanted a way to profile those applications as well. I noticed that EQATEC was offering WP7 developers a way to profile their WP7 applications for free and I jumped on the chance. The best thing about ...

I’ve blogged about the tools and have played with the hardware, now its time to put an application on the actual Windows Phone 7 hardware. I will guide you through the entire process step-by-step. Please note that I have an early version of the phone and had to get a Connect Login to download Zune 4.7. If you are reading this after the phone has launched then you can probably just go to the Zune web page and download it directly. While I think that Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot by not releasing WP7 on CDMA networks this year (such as Sprint, meaning no new phone for me personally), these two free developer training events in Dallas sound interesting: Day 1, Wed. Oct. 20: In the first of this two-day launch event, we’ll take you under the hood of Windows Phone 7 and the Windows Phone 7 platform with a progressive set of learning sessions. We’ll start with the basic tools and fundamentals of Windows Phone 7 application ...
Has it ever happened to you that you are sitting with your laptop and need to do something with a computer on your local network and it turns out that computer is in a sleep mode and you have to walk to it and move the mouse or press some key to wake it up and then come back to your laptop to do what you initially wanted to do with it? Indeed, if you have to walk to a computer rather than remotely access it than the benefit of having local network is already somewhat undermined. My particular situation ...
One of the things I really wanted to do lately was to get SQL Azure, OData, and Windows Phone 7 working together; in essence, expose SQL Azure data using the OData protocol and consume that data on a Windows Mobile Phone 7 device. This blog will explain how to do just that. This example is also in our SQL Azure book in a bit more detail, but with the push for WP7 I thought I'd give a sneak-peak here. You will first need to download and install a couple of things, the first of which is the OData client ...

This is going to be my first blog post. I'm not going to post anything particularly meaningful this time, the intent is just to kick off blogging. Hopefully, I will be posting on a regular basis. So the release of WP7 devices is drawing closer and closer and lots of my friends are know asking me about what I know that is new. I just can’t wait for the release and I like telling them what I find out when I can. Its then expected to see phones released in Europe starting on October 21st. Here in the ...
