The published SQL Azure documentation indicates that authentication may require the suffix "@servername" attached to your username (where servername is your SQL Azure server name), but there is little additional information provided to differentiate the required scenarios from the non-required. I recently attended a user group chat with David Robinson, Program Manager for SQL Azure. During his presentation, he also mentioned the occasional need for "@servername", but didn't get into detail. When ...
Introduction I don’t do web programming… I have been programming client applications for years and consider myself a WPF/Silverlight developer. The web thing always seemed a bit scary in its stateless environment with limited functionality and cross browser headaches. That was until recently when apparently HTML5 was going to kill Silverlight and I eventually decided that I would need to get educated and up to date. Since that decision I have re-accustomed myself with HTML, CSS & JavaScript. ...
I was recently installing BizTalk Server 2010 and encountered an error that I had not seen before: Error 5009 Registration of BAM performance counters failed After a small amount of investigation it turn out to be a known issue where the performance counter registry has been damaged. To fix this problem open a command prompt as administrator and run: lodctr /r This will rebuild the performance counter registry, after which you should be able to successfully install BizTalk Server ...
Lately, I have been taking some time to learn some new technologies. For me, the best way to learn a new technology is to jump head first into a project: Daily deal websites such as GroupOn, LivingSocial, DealFind, etc. have really taken off over the last 6 months. With so many sites out there, my inbox was being flooded with emails from all these daily deal websites. This seemed like it might be a fun project, so I set out to build a daily deal aggregator. First, I built a Windows Phone 7 app. I ...
I ran into an interesting scenario when a colleague of mine was setting up a list in SharePoint 2010. He was creating a list, with a phone number column, a phone extension column, and a calculated column for phone display. Things were working fine, until he entered some data and the display column didn’t look right. When he opened the settings for the phone display, he saw this in the formula: #NAME?-#NAME?After some tinkering, we got it to work by changing the name of the phone extension column. ...

This has been an interesting topic to have discussions around planning storage and storage requirements organizations need to consider. FILESTREAM provides a means to consider storage of unstructured data on the File system (specifically NTFS). As we know SharePoint lends itself to allow storage of large binary data, considering FILESTREAM gives us an option of using commodity storage for binary form unstructured data. Again, another way in which SQL Server and SharePoint work together. The SharePoint ...
One of the little known facts about MSE is that it can be used as an antivirus solution on Windows 2008 R2 Server. I use Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter as my workstation OS and I have been looking around for a good antivirus solution to be used with my OS and tried out many of the free antivirus softwares and none of them would even get installed on the Server machine, but as it turns out MSE works just fine on WIN2008 R2. it is free and doesn’t hog too much resources also. You can get it from here http://www.microsoft.com/se... ...
Article Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/c... How do you send "Call Context" information in the header message to Dynamics AX 2012 WCF services from BizTalk? One difference between AX 2009 and AX 2012 services, is that you no longer always need to provide destination endpoint context information. This is described here: In previous releases, each AIF endpoint was associated with a specific company. Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 does not require that you associate integration ports with a specific ...
If you organize your BizTalk projects based on the type of artifacts, e.g., a solution contains schema project, pipeline project, map project, orchestration project, you might often encounter build failure problems due to the missing assembly reference. Sometime, even if you have the references properly added and you are able to verify them in object browser, you might still have problem not seeing the newly added or modified artifacts in any configuration window. The reasons for this kind of issues ...
Hyper-V Virtual Machines Advantage: 64-bit support dynamic memory allocation multi-core CPU Can install Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and later Disadvantage: Can't get sound to work on those machines yet [Updated 2011-05-05] This is disappointing, but I guess it fits most people's requirement as most people don't use Hyper-V for personal development environment. Guess I'll just have to set up those machines for remote connect. http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jo... ...
RedGate SQL Source Control is a Management Studio add-in that allows you to seamlessly (hopefully...) connect your existing source control system to SQL Server. It is advertised as doing all the typical stuff you'd expect: Source control schemas and data within SSMS Connect databases to TFS, SVN, Sourcegear Vault, Vault Pro, Mercurial, Perforce, Git, Bazaar, and any source control system with a capable command line Work with shared development databases, or individual copies Track changes to follow ...
I have found myself using more and more of the tools Red Gate software makes. They have proven (to me) to be effective and to the point. This time I am talking about SQL Source Control. Simple to use, simple to add a database to be under Change Control, which really is the goal. Don’t take me wrong, Visual Studio is a great tool, yet it is a developer’s tool. As a DBA or Database Developer (referring to an individual who codes T-SQL) we want to launch SQL Server Management Studio and be able to control ...

As Harry Hill might say, "I like Visual Studio. And I like Eclipse. But which one is better? Only one way to find out…" For a lot of people a lot of the time, the question is irrelevant. If you are doing Java development, you are going to pick Eclipse, and for .NET development you are going to pick Visual Studio. But both IDEs are extensible, and have communities providing extensions for other languages, so if you are using another language it might not be so clear cut. And if you are a language ...

In this post I want to highlight how easy it is starting a MVC Project using NuGet and deploy it to AppHarbor. It is not much but it is fun. First you need to install Visual Studio 2010. Then, go to Tools –> Extension Manager. From the Online Galery install NuGet ( if you don’t already have it ). Make sure you also have ASP.NET MVC3 installed. Create a new MVC 3 Project. Add a Class Library project to the solution. Since you’ve added NuGet you have access to the Package Manager Console. I’m sure ...
I haven’t been able to get my work email syncing with my Samsung Focus since I started the new gig due to some certificate issues. When I try to connect, I’m just told there’s a problem with the certificate. The real underlying issue is that the certificate for my work email isn’t installed on my WP7 device. Unfortunately, this ends up being a manual task that you have to perform, but its not a difficult one once you know what to do. Jerome Laban’s blog post talks about the root cause of the issue: ...
Many time developer required specific port for development when he/she using Visual Studio for asp.net application development. They specify port by taking Properties of the Web Site and select Web option. Under Server option select Use Visual Studio Development Server and then set port in Specific Port option. Ok when Windows Azure developer need to set a specific port to the WebRole application they need to take different approach. From Solution Explorer Window select open WebRole Section in my ...
Over the last months, I have been putting a considerable level of effort recovering databases. That would be databases in dev, staging and prod. Somewhere, somehow someone got access to Prod and decided to mess with it. All in all this has created some heartburn and so on. Again, not only from the downtime it has caused and the lengthy recovery process. We figured we could use interim solutions that would become active only when we knew a transition period had arrived, while effective, the changes ...
After several months of research, review and revision, a white paper I wrote for the SQL Azure team, “NoSQL and the Windows Azure Platform”, has been published by Microsoft. If you go to http://www.microsoft.com/wi... and do a find within the page for “NoSQL” you’ll see a link for it. If you’d rather download the PDF directly, you can do so by clicking here. The 25-page (not including cover and TOC) paper provides an introduction to NoSQL database technology, and its major subcategories, ...
The error seems to be quite simplistic, but you might need to do quite a bit to resolve this. I created a new BI site and was welcomed by the Error Message "The WorkBook cannot be opened". Did some google and tried to find out a solution. Found a good post which kinda came to the rescue to resolve this irritant. You can follow the article by Jeremy to resolve the issue: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jja... ...
Am back to SQL Server performance turning after a year of a lot of things, as always I love sharing what I am doing to help someone in need and to create a point of reference to my work. Below is a SQL script that will allow SQL tables Index Rebuilding or Re-Organization, I added the Online flag to allow my tables to be accessible during the re-indexing process. You can reference BOL to see how the ONLINE flag works and the limitations that it brings along. Remember for ONLINE feature to work you ...
In case of the great community response I released NetSparkle 1.0.60. This release is mainly focused on additional languages, e.g. nl-NL, fr-FR, bg-BG and ru-RU. UPDATED 28 December 2013 In this post I am writing how to fix the MySql.Data.MySqlClient issue when server doesn’t make call to same library with same version that is used in development server. Back in 2011 when we use Mysql I prefer simply to use .net connector. At the end of 2013 (december) I doesn’t like to use .net connector anymore. I personally hate it. In my another post I write it clearly Don’t use MySQL .net connector, here is why ? Use nuget in Visual studio is best and easier option which ...
*Moved to: In-Place upgrade of TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 with move to new domain I had a particularly complicated upgrade this time that required me to do two things: In-Place upgrade of TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 Move new TFS 2010 server from one domain to another I followed Vasu Sankaran’s post on Guidance for upgrading to TFS 2010 along with domain move to make sure I did not fall into any of the known pitfalls, but unfortunately everything went screwy when we tried to move domain. First, let me clarify the “killing kittens” statement. A couple of years back, I had a chance of attending a sessions presented by Todd Klindt and Shane Young on SharePoint Installation and to raise awareness of how little control, and not to say the limitations, of installing in Standalone mode, they would state “Everytime a SharePoint Standalone Installation happens, God kills a kitten”. Ok, now on to the rest of the purpose of the post. Assumption: SQL Server 2008 R2 is already installed on the ...
HTML5 introduces markup-level functionality for rich graphics, animation and web multimedia. It also supports a richer web application functionality and extends the client capabilities with local storage. Many pundits see it as the next generation web - web 3.0 if you like - and an open standard replacement for propriety plug-ins, Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash. But, for all its new features, HTML5 is still only the end product. This article looks at HTML5 from the web programmer's point of ...
One of the questions I get asked most about WP7 is what the enterprise story is. With the initial release of WP7, there isn’t one…at least not like iPhone which offers an internal server application for distributing apps within an organization, or BlackBerry with their BEZ server. Currently all apps need to go through the AppHub marketplace for WP7. A friend of mine working on a non-public app worked around this by requiring a seperate unlock key to be used, but this isn’t practical over the long ...
Business Connectivity Services is a new provided to what earlier existed as Business Data Catalogue in SharePoint. BCS adds a lot of new features and has been enhanced immensely now. BCS connects with the external systems including but not limited to: 1. Microsoft SQL Server Databases 2. Your very own custom applications 3. Other SharePoint WebSites 4. Web Services hosted All these sources are exposed as SharePoint Lists, hence all the operations which are applicable to lists can be performed on ...
Here’s a quick start introduction to the ADO.NET Entity Framework Code First Development Pattern. For a more complete (but still intro) walkthrough, check out ScottGu’s blog. At the time of this writing, you’ll need the EF 4.1 Release Candidate. After EF 4.1 is released you’ll no doubt be able to find it on the ADO.NET team blog. 1. Create a new empty ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application, add a reference to System.Data.Entity. If using the EF4.1 RC - add a reference to the EntityFramework dll that comes ...
I was recently installing a new BizTalk Server 2010 mult-server implementation, where the SQL server installation resides on a separate server to the BizTalk server installation(s) and I ran into a problem when attempting to configure the first server in the BizTalk Group. I was able to succesfully set up the configuration, but when applying the configuration the tool was unable to create the BizTalk Group. The SSO set up completed successfully, and looking at the SQL server a number of BizTalk Databases ...
If you are: Involved in developing software products (aka an Independent Software Vendor) or Considering a “move to the cloud” or both! Then you should consider joining one or both of these Microsoft UK created LinkedIn groups intended to foster discussion amongst your peers in the industry. Both groups are fairly new but growing and there is already some great discussion happening on them. Last week, I was interviewed by Zandra Nilocas from Microsoft Philippines. It was my first time experience to talk about something in front of the camera so it's not surprising that I looked like an idiot in that interview (you know swiveling my chair back and forth without noticing it). Anyway in the interview we talked about ASP.NET WebForms, MVC and Web Matrix in general and just to elaborate a bit of what we talked about and to clarify things out, I have decided to write this post... WebForms ...

If you provide external access to Microsoft Office 2007 R2 Communicator Web Access Server for your users, you need to make sure your users are enabled for remote user access. I am working with a client to upgrade enterprise libraries in current code that they use. Specifically upgrading InfoPath 2003 Managed Code. Here are some things I learned while doing their upgrade: 1) Custom Sink = Custom Trace Listeners Enterprise library 1.1 or whatever the earlier version is has a Logging Block that allows you to create custom logging functionality. They were called Custom Sinks, well they are now called custom Trace Listeners in 4.1 and later. I can't say what 3.0 called them ...

Last time I posted something regarding Converting IP Addresses to Decimal and Looping an IP Address Range The next step is to do something with those remote IP Addresses. The first thing that we can play with is to get some information from a remote host using Netbios Name Service. Some of the information that we can get using the class below are 1. Mac Address 2. Netbios Name (Computer Name) 3. Netbios Group (Workgroup name, Domain Name) 4. Netbios Username Below is the initial helper class I coded ...

Transactions are a great way to perform many actions but make it appear as one unit. Always start a transaction with BEGIN TRAN. Let's take a look at these statements: 1: BEGIN TRAN 2: DELETE SCHEDULES When this code runs, SQL Server opens a transactions and tentatively deletes all records from the SCHEDULES. The records are not actually deleted until a COMMIT. When a tranmsaction starts, SQL Server places a lock on the SCHEDULES rows or the entire table. This lock will prevent other users from making ...
Full Disclaimer: Since I am on the GeeksWithBlog.NET Influencer list, I was issued a free 1-year subscription to DiscountASP.NET TFS2010 remote hosting. With that said, the thoughts/opinions located below are my own. I’ve always like Team Foundation Server. The main thing that I’ve hated about it was installing/maintaining it. I’d rather spend that time learning more about things such as Silverlight/WPF/WP7. I really didn’t know what to expect as we use another source control at work and I’ve never ...
