Transactions are a great way to perform many actions but make it appear as one unit. Always start a transaction with BEGIN TRAN. Let's take a look at these statements: 1: BEGIN TRAN 2: DELETE SCHEDULES When this code runs, SQL Server opens a transactions and tentatively deletes all records from the SCHEDULES. The records are not actually deleted until a COMMIT. When a tranmsaction starts, SQL Server places a lock on the SCHEDULES rows or the entire table. This lock will prevent other users from making ...
Full Disclaimer: Since I am on the GeeksWithBlog.NET Influencer list, I was issued a free 1-year subscription to DiscountASP.NET TFS2010 remote hosting. With that said, the thoughts/opinions located below are my own. I’ve always like Team Foundation Server. The main thing that I’ve hated about it was installing/maintaining it. I’d rather spend that time learning more about things such as Silverlight/WPF/WP7. I really didn’t know what to expect as we use another source control at work and I’ve never ...
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, I’ll be speaking on IntelliTrace at Tech Ed 2001 – North America. This blog post is the first in a series that I’ll publish as I delve into IntelliTrace in more detail, in preparation for my talk. IntelliTrace is enabled by default in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but it is configured so as to only capture some basic information, so as to not impact application performance. I thought a good starting point would be to look and see what the different configuration ...
This is my first post, so i am not sure how to proceed. I was very anxious to post something relevant to IT community but due to work loads or a thought that everything is available on net here or there keeping me away to post. But there is always a first time . Recently when i was working on a change requirement i had to change a table data in a manner in which field data toggles. Essentially it was a production entity table like parts in a batch manufacturing. So the table contained a field [Status] ...

If you are going to be in the Washington D.C. area on April 28th, and you want to learn more about both Scrum, and how to utilize Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010, then you really need to attend the free 1-day seminar, “Agile Scrum Development Practices with the Experts”. This event is being hosted by Ken Schwaber, one of the co-founders of the Scrum process, as well as Richard Hundhausen, who, in addition to his many qualifications, has helped develop the official Microsoft “Professional Scrum ...
Previously we've talked about how to fetch the data from the database and populate the form with EF. In this example I'm going to demonstrate how to do Edit,Update and Delete operations in the form with Entity Framework. And oh since this is a continuation of my previous example I would suggest you to refer that first before you go any further. STEP 1: Setting up the UI Since this is a continuation of my previous example then I'm jus going to use the same layout and extend it a bit by adding some ...
In Part 1 we've talked about how to insert data to the database with Entity Framework. In this part I'm going to demonstrate how to fetch the data from the database and populate the form fields with Entity Framework. STEP 1: Setting up the Form To get started let's go ahead and fire-up visual studio and add a new WebForm. For the simplicity of this demo I just set up the form like this: <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainC... runat="server"> <asp:DropDownList ID="ddlUser" ...
Over the last few days I’ve been coding away with several ORMS and code generators trying to find me one which I am comfortable with. Here is what I learn Not all ORMs are perfect! SubSonic Telerik OpenAccess nHibernate via Code smith Generator and LLBLGen LLBLGen Pro Framework SubSonic This is an awesome piece of work my Mr. Conery (and team)…for FREE! I’ve been using this for quite a while now. It is excellent for small projects, both Web and Winform apps. It’s a breeze to setup and get off and ...
I have a .Net 4.0 site that uses Entity Framework and Linq to SQL. After reworking a few tables and a few page operations, a new error appeared: "Row not found or changed". Every time I commit changes to a particular table, this error would be raised. From a quick review of msdn and the internet, the primary reason for this exception appears to be data concurrency issues - (The source data in the database is out of sync with the data you are attempting to update.) That did not apply to my development ...
Ok here is a cool trick I figured out that I hope will be helpful to someone: What if you wanted to block all the incoming ip addresses from a given country to a given site using only PHP and mySQL (without using .htaccess, etc.) and be able to log who you blocked into your mySQL database? First, you need to have a white list or a black list. I got mine from http://software77.net/geo-ip/ because they were free, based off of countries and worked pretty darn well. For myself, I used the x.x.x.x-y.y.y.y ...
I’m trying to setup TFS Lab Management on a new server and I ran into a really weird issue trying to configure it that I figured I’d share the solution to in case anybody else encountered it. This was a brand new machine, I installed Windows Server 2008 R2, all the Windows Updates, joined the machine to the domain, then started running through the Lab Management Install Guide: Configuring Lab Management for the First Time I had a previously created Domain Account called TFSLAB created specifically ...

We noticed some very odd, random behavior in our environment specifically with Exchange 2010 ActiveSync and Outlook Web App. Some of our mobile devices had trouble synchronizing email (problems with connecting, direct push wasn’t working properly). Some of our users had trouble connecting to Outlook Web App. Some of our users using Outlook Web App externally were inadvertently connecting to other user mailboxes that they did not have permission to and, not to mention, a serious security breach (I ...

Problem I noticed a new feature that was first introduced in SQL Server 2005, which is the Emergency state for a database. It looks that it may facilitate dealing with a suspect database. How can I use the Emergency state for a database effectively while working with a suspect database? Solution During a disaster recovery process, the Emergency state provides flexibility to perform several operations on a corrupt/suspect database. When a database is put in the Emergency state, it makes three major ...

Whilst enjoying my enforced 8-months Swedish paternity leave I have fund a bit of time to continue looking at Windows Azure and AppFabric (both Server and Azure), and have started another series of Azure webcasts with the first one on Azure Storage (please excuse my daughter having a tantrum half-way through recording). I plan to look at the existing functionality present in Windows Azure, and then look at the emerging technologies in Windows Azure AppFabric. The first in the series is “An Introduction ...
For the last three years the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group has been the only community in the Chicago area for Software Architects, Enterprise Architects, Infrastructure Architects and Database Architects. Suddenly this is changing. The first change was a special interest group created by member of the Chicago .NET Users Group (CNUG). This has just started in the last couple of months. Now it was just announced that IASA is finally launching a Chicago chapter. This is something ...
While converting some MySql databases to SQL Server I ran across this function. Confused by the lack of hints to its purpose in the name I did what any red-blooded IT person would do… look it up. It turns out that this function turns the string representation of an IP address into a long integer. What good that does I am still not sure, but here is the jist of the operation. (octet1 * 256^3) + (octet2 * 256^2) + (octet3 * 256) + octet4 Simple enough, right? Now for the real question. What the heck ...

My blog has been quiet recently, mainly because I've been spending a bunch of time putting together an iPhone app which talks to a set of RESTful WCF services hosted in Azure, backing onto SQL Azure for storage. This post is a technical walkthrough of that architecture and some of the learning experiences, but after this it will be back to normal. I have a couple of nice open-source projects which are coming soon, including a log4net appender which writes to Event Tracing for Windows (ETW), and a ...

LightSwitch Beta 2 is out. That’s how all this started. All I wanted was to install it on my MBP’s Win7 Parallels VM. But as I’m finding with running a Win7 VM on a MBP, nothing is as easy as it should be. First my MBP froze during the SP1 installation. Not my VM crashing, the entire machine freezing…no mouse, nothing. Had to do a hard reset. BLECH. Then we’re back and I try to re-install SP1 (since the first try obviously failed). I get met with a dialog asking me where silverlight_sdk.msi was. ...

After we moved one of our user mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to 2010, the user started getting a Cannot get mail. The connection to the server failed error message on their iPhone device. What is cloud computing? Is hosting the same thing as cloud computing? Are you running a cloud if you already use virtual machines? What is the difference between Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and a cloud provider? And the list goes on… these questions keep coming up and all try to fundamentally explain what “cloud” means relative to other concepts. At the risk of over simplification, answering these questions becomes simpler once you understand the primary foundations of cloud computing: Elasticity ...

After feeling pretty good about my deployment skills of Management Reporter for Dynamics GP a few weeks ago, I ran into two additional lessons learned that I wanted to share. First, on another new deployment, I got the error shown below which says “An error occurred while creating the database. View the installation log for additional information.” This problem initially pointed me to KB 2406948 which did not provide resolution. After several hours of troubleshooting, I found there is an issue if ...

I was very excited when Microsoft released the Internet Explorer 9 Release Candidate. As far as I was concerned, this was another nail in the coffin for IE6 and step in the right direction for us .NET web developers as our base camp was finally starting to support the latest and greatest future-web standards. Unfortunately, my celebration was short lived as I soon hit a snag while loading up an HTML5 site I was building in Visual Studio 2010. The Mystery After updating Internet Explorer, I ran my ...
After successfully completing several installations of Management Reporter this year, I wanted to share a few lessons learned that should help you. First, you will want to make sure that you install Management Reporter under a domain account as opposed to a local system or network service account. Management Reporter gives you the option to install under these accounts, but it is a be a best practice approach to use a domain account. Upon installation of Management Report, you will want to make sure ...

Yesterday I told Wang Tao, an annoying colleague sitting beside me, about how to make the static content enable the CDN in his website which had just been published on Windows Azure. The approach would be Move the static content, the images, CSS files, etc. into the blob storage. Enable the CDN on his storage account. Change the URL of those static files to the CDN URL. I think these are the very common steps when using CDN. But this morning I found that the new Windows Azure SDK 1.4 and new Windows ...
In the last month or so I have been able to test and experience first hand the offering from discountasp.net for hosted TFS 2010. This first part is a description of the setup process for the account itself and getting some additional information on what you will find through the portal on their site. Not long ago, I posted a little tidbit on hosting TFS. Through it I also did a shameless plug to my employer, our services and the type of hosting we recommend. So, wouldn’t me running on discountasp.net ...
Ok, So you're here because you've been trying to solve the mystery of why you're getting a 504 error. If you've made it to this lonely corner of the Internet, then the advice you're getting from other bloggers isn't the answer you are after. It wasn't the answer I needed either, so once I did solve my problem, I thought I'd share the answer with you. For starters, if by some miracle, you landed here first you may not already know that the 504 error is NOT coming from IIS or Casini, that response ...

Disclosure: I performed the following activities on my Windows 7 SP1 system, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 and a local Basic installation of TFS 2010. As with any deployment of a service pack into a server environment, take your recommended precautions and be aware of the changes you are putting in. With that said, make sure you backup your databases, and that you have an exit/rollback strategy in the event of an unexpected situation. Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 corresponds to KB2182621. ...
Today, I've been working on deploying farm solutions to another farm and I was surprised that it can only be done using STSADM.exe. Below are the steps that I've done to get it to work : 1. Answer I have been asked a couple of times this year about taking compute intensive operations to Windows Azure and/or High Performance Computing on Windows Azure.
