First off in order to get your asp.net site up and running (without membership) all you have to do is copy your aspx files to the root of the htdocs folder that they supply for you. This in itself is an application directory and because of this you can run ASP.NET pages. For your information, I host my site with HostForLife.euSecond, you can use membership by going to their admin pages, creating a database, exporting your data and schema from your current membership database, and then running a script ...
Recently (as in, last night) I started playing with jQuery Mobile. My experiences with jQuery, while occasionally frustrating, have been overwhelmingly positive. So when a friend mentioned jQuery Mobile to me, I figured I'd give it a try. A little Googling revealed some helpful tutorials and other resources, one of which was this handy basic page (which I got from here) <!DOCTYPE html><html><hea... I remember myself a tweet from Scott Hanselman a couple of months ago, where he asked us to check out a small application he wrote. As one of the first testers of his new "thing", I was interested but there were no documentation or libs available yet. A couple of days a go, I read a blogpost from Maarten Balliauw about SignalR. (Maarten's blog). Because I allready heard about SignalR a couple of months ago, I had to develop a very small application to test how it really works. 1. Install SignalR ...

I played a bit with WCF and security, but I had some trouble to create certificates between the server and the client.

This article helped me out:
9 simple steps to enable X.509 certificates on WCF

For an integration solution with lots of dependencies, it's difficult to definitively state that everything is wired up correctly and that all components in the stack are working. A while ago, Michael Stephenson proposed having a diagnostic service in a solution as a quick way of verifying that a given environment was working, end-to-end. Initially I was sceptical, on the grounds that there shouldn't be any code in a solution which isn't directly solving a business problem, but having tried it out ...

Whenever I do use Visual Studio and try to compile something under 64 bit I run into problems. It seems that most MS Devs for Visual Studio and the relevant tool chain are still mainly writing 32 bit applications. Here are some of the latest issues I did run into. COM applications targeting x64 are still using x32 as target platform for the MIDL compiler by default Resolution: You have to select in the UI MIDL – Target Environment X64 by yourself. Alternatively you can edit the vcxproj file directly ...
Our TFS instance had been humming along for some time when I noticed that the full and incremental cube refresh jobs started failing. Using Grant Holiday’s “Team Foundation Server 2010 Administrative Report Pack” I was able to better visualize and diagnose the problem. The Problem The full error message was - OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: Login timeout expired; HYT00; A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found ...
Yesterday, Microsoft announced the forthcoming release of BizTalk Server 2010 R2 on the BizTalk Server blog site. This is advanced notice, given that this new version will ship six months after the release of Windows 8, expected in the second half of next year. On this basis, we can expect the new version of BizTalk Server to arrive in 2013. Given the BizTalk team’s previous record of name changes, I wonder if this will eventually be released as BizTalk Server 2013. Microsoft has been refreshingly ...
If you haven't already checked out WebMatrix , go check it out now. It's awesome for a variety of reasons. It’s very cool feature.Anyway, one of the cool features of WebMatrix (and Visual Studio 2010) is the ability to publish straight from the IDE to a compatible web host. Not all web hosts support Web Deploy but I know HostForLife.eu support this technology. Here is a quick walk-through with screenshots showing the publishing process from WebMatrix. I try to publish Orchard CMS here. J OK, let’s ...

I was recently made aware of a couple of people having issues with WCF services (or ASP.NET applications) when using the MVVM Light project template for Silverlight. There is a blog post and a StackOverflow question, so what exactly is happening there?

Renaming SharePoint service app databases When you install SharePoint 2010 and use the wizards, you will be asked which services you’d like to install. By default all but Lotus-Notes-Connector are preselected. SharePoint will install the services and assign a plethora of databases to serve these services. Alas, horror of horror, all these databases are named by Microsoft and all end with GUIDs. DBAs and other keepers of standards abhor it. Sometimes they even go a step further and want the DB names ...
I hope you are aware that DOWNLOAD.COM a.k.a. CNET is in the opinion of many people (including myself) to be part of the Malware camp. MS knowledge base article which is of interest: Consider the following scenario: You have multiple servers that are running Microsoft Exchange Server. The servers that are running Exchange Server are hosted in a VMware ESX environment. The servers that are running Exchange Server are part of a Windows Network Load Balancing cluster. Windows Network Load Balancing is configured to run in unicast mode. In this scenario, Windows Network Load Balancing may not work correctly. For example, network traffic ...
Consider this article on DNS a prequel to the upcoming ADDS series. After all, any active directory implementation requires DNS integration. So what is DNS? DNS is a highly reliable, hierarchal, distributed and scalable database used for name resolution and service location. So basically it translates friendly names (www.contoso.com) in to IP addresses (11.12.13.14) allowing clients to connect to resources in the infrastructure without memorising pesky IP numbers. History of DNS When the DoD initially ...
Overview Windows HPC Server 2008 is infrastructure for high-end applications that require high performance computing clusters – i.e. for scaling out parallelizable across many compute nodes in a grid. These compute nodes can be coordinated by a head node , which in turn can be proxied via a service broker node that exposes a SOA WCF interface for job scheduling. Additional functionality includes the ability to coordinate between job processes running on nodes via MPI (message passing interface). ...
Last week I get the information directly from Microsoft, that at build machines SDKs must be installed to guarantee that MSBuild works well in some circumstances. We have the problem, that a self-containing build should include all necessary build artifacts – particularly Silverlight stuff. I tried to encapsulate the special steps in own targets and a build was finally possible (see my former posts). But at local machines without installed Silverlight stuff it gives problems for problems. Because ...
Here is the official documentation on how to publish a LightSwitch application – How to: Deploy a LightSwitch Application. For this example, I’m going to show how to deploy a simple application that does not have any role-based security set up. I’ll show how we can configure that in a later post. So back over on my LightSwitch development machine the first thing we need to do is specify the type of 3-tier deployment we want. In the case of my application, I want it to be a Windows Desktop client ...
One of the main attraction points to this offering in my review is how does it fit into the work I do and solutions I recommend. Right off, the fact it has capabilities described as Silverlight focus/MVVM , makes it something that intrigued me. I tested the different capabilities it has from using it in WinForms and WPF as well, and Silverlight. One of the main points is the C1DataSource, it shows a level of simplicity through the property dialogs that allows you to move right along with, for example, ...
Let me clarify what I mean by “3 role” environment. When looking at the division of roles with products, solutions or environments, it has been very normal to break it down into IT Pros (Admins), Developers and End Users. And many approach SharePoint in the same style. Does it fit? Sure. Is it the most effective approach? HECK NO! Let’s look at it piece by piece. Now the question is where do we start? We need to redefine this. In all cases leaving it as IT Pros, Developers and End Users is too broad. ...
This blog post sounds specific but most of the troubleshooting tips can be applied to other scenarios: Troubleshooting Microsoft Message Queuing Issues on Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) plays an important role in the Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Monitoring/Archiving server infrastructure: in a distributed network environment, MSMQ is used to transmit data from agents located on other servers (such as Front End Servers) to Monitoring/Archiving servers. The purpose of this ...
Goal: Rebuild indexes in SQL server. This can be done one at a time or with the example script below to rebuild all index for a specified table or for all tables in a given database. Why? The data in indexes gets fragmented over time. That means that as the index grows, the newly added rows to the index are physically stored in other sections of the allocated database storage space. Kind of like when you load your Christmas shopping into the trunk of your car and it is full you continue to load some ...
At http://weblogs.asp.net/scot... Scott Guthrie talks about data binding is ASP.NET 4.5.There is a key statement "Because our GetProducts() method is returning an IQueryable<Product>, users can easily page and sort through the data within our GridView. Only the 10 rows that are visible on any given page are returned from the database."Consider paging through a large dataset, this is going to give ...
I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was ...

It’s a small step, but its purpose is to show that ...
Microsoft Lync Server 2010 communications software and its client software, such as Microsoft Lync 2010, enable your users to connect in new ways and to stay connected, regardless of their physical location. © 2011 By: Dov Trietsch. All rights reserved Ranking Ranking is quite common in the internet. Readers are asked to rank their latest reading by clicking on one of 5 (sometimes 10) stars. The number of stars is then converted to a number and the average number of stars as selected by all the readers is proudly (or shamefully) displayed for future readers. SharePoint 2007 lacked this feature altogether. SharePoint 2010 allows the users to rank items in a list or documents in a library (the two are ...

Ok, so I needed to convert .docx files to .pdf files on the fly, but none of the free php libraries that were available let me do it on my server (a webservice was not good enough). Basically either I needed to pay for a library (and have it maybe suck) or just deal with the free ones that didn't convert the formatting well enough. Not good enough! I found that LibreOffice (OpenOffice's successor) allows command line conversion using the LibreOffice conversion engine (which DID preserve the formatting ...

I'm working on a 5+ year old ASP.NET project that has 74+ projects and we've been adding new Silverlight applications to run in the ASP.NET page islands. My machine at work isn't the most powerful, so I find myself waiting a lot for the whole thing to build. I'm using Visual Studio 2010, so that takes up a lot of resources as well. This causes me to get distracted and I start looking at the news... I need to combat that more :-). I can't get a new machine, that's up to someone else, so I've found ...

Occasionally I am surprised to open up my toolbox and find a great tool that I've had for years and never noticed. The other day I had just such an experience with Windows Server 2008. A co-worker of mine was squinting to read to screenshots that he had taken using the "Print Screen, paste" method in WordPad and asked me if there was a better tool available at a reasonable cost. My first instinct was to take a look at CamStudio for him, but I also knew that he had an immediate need to take some more ...
