No matter which ORM or data access technology you use, at some point you just need to do some CRUD, and you need to do it fast. In this post, I’m going to show you how to get your CRUD on with the latest version of Entity Framework in no time flat. In fact, I’d be surprised if the code to get your first CRUD operation done takes you more than a few minutes. The one thing the EF team did right with Code-First is make it really easy, but most of the “getting started” videos and documentation is packed ...
Recently I was tasked with rebuilding or migrating our Certificate Authority to a new server. The previous server was 8 years old and was holding some pretty critical information. Some of which was a Domain Controller, Certificate Authority, Email, Public Folders, Share Folders, and some Printers. Since our Public Folders were not replicating, that was the first priority. I solved that by changing the IIS port that was configured, once that was solved, the Public Folders took off. Second challenge ...
During the build of a new Domain Controller that has DHCP enabled I was wondering how I can get the DHCP reservations off the old server to the new server. I stumbled upon this set of commands that saved my life. On the existing (old) server: netsh dhcp server export C:\dhcp.txt all Copy the txt file to the new server, and run this command. On the new server: netsh dhcp server import C:\dhcp.txt Seems to work great, and saved me a ton of time ...
Windows Server 2008 R2 has a built in Scheduled Task that defragments your hard drive sometime over night. But, I was wondering if this is actually working, and on one server I have found it isn't. So, here is my PS script that I'm working on. This is also my first "real" PowerShell script I've written. It took me some time! foreach ($computerName in Get-Content "C:\Users\matt.ladd\Desktop... { Write-Host $computerName $drive = Get-WmiObject -computerName $computerName -Class Win32_Volume ...
Today I wanted to count each unique element in a SQL Server table to make sure they were unique. Took a bit of playing but this finally works great: SELECT DISTINCT t.columntocheck, (Select COUNT(columntocheck) from tabletoserach where columntocheck = t.columntocheck) as countof FROM tabletoserach t This gives me back a list of all unique items in columntocheck and also counts the number of them. Of course, theres no where clause on this so be careful if you have a huge table. Mine was really small, ...
Recently, several enabled Remote call control (RCC) users reported that they were having issues making phone calls from Communicator. When they attempted to call a number, they got a “Cannot locate <user>” error message and when they clicked on Retry, they got another error message, “There may be an error in the address. Check the address and then try again.” After some troubleshooting, we found out our CSTA Gateway server was using an expired certificate. For communication to take place, the ...
Had a great time again this year at St. Louis Day of .NET. Thanks to everyone who attended my sessions. Based on feedback it seems like I'll need to do a presentation on SQL Server Compact next year. Doesn't seem to be a lot of awareness on this great product. But a lot can change in one year. As promised, the PowerPoint slides and code samples can be found on my SkyDrive here. Here is what you get. Customizing BlogEngine 2 PowerPoint (Slides and notes) How to configure BlogEngine to use ASP.NET ...
I'm an Asp.Net web developer, but the truth is, I always preferred the MVC than WebForms. Especially what I hate in WebForms is the update panel control. I have always problems with it when I want to use it in my current scenario, so easier to me is to write some jQuery code and do the controls refresh manually. I know that, there are situatios when I can't skip the update panels, so this post is a reference for my future battles. A simple example of one update panel with button and some labels. ...

Technorati Tags: Scala,C# to Scala Introduction This post gives an overview of Scala from a C# developer’s perspective in light of efforts for a current .Net port coming closer to fruition. By closer I mean they have the compiler done but not the Visual Studio or SharpDevelop plug-in. From what I could find there is also no CLR based REPL available. You are also unable to call CLR code with generic signatures. While all of these issues are being worked on, to have a play I suggest using the JVM implementation ...
I have been working with power shell quite a bit lately, I thought I’d write about 3 tips that have helped me. Notice how it is titled, "Helpful"? not "Ground breaking". It includes helpful commands that I have been using and a nice little Script editor that has one feature enough to win me over. Other's have writen about the commands (most of the time I write so I remember what I've done and how I have resolved issues) but I have not seen others write about other script editors. If you have been ...
Shervin Shakibi, Microsoft Regional Director, was our speaker at the West Palm Beach .Net User Group July 2011 meeting. Shervin’s talk was demo-centric where he showcased the power of HTML 5 by example. Issues discussed at the meeting included suggestions on mitigating security concerns with HTML 5 source code accessibility as well as the status and timeline for HTML 5 readiness. Shervin’s much anticipated talk brought us over 25 members who filled our CompTec meeting room. We appreciate Shervin’s ...
As of today, the official release of Lightswitch is now available. Visit: http://www.microsoft.com/vi... or you can download from your MSDN subscription. What is Lightswitch? It is basically a simple to use application generator that can be used to build applications within minutes in many cases. If you have an existing, well structured (primary keys, relationships) SQL Server database you are just a few clicks away from an administration tool and well on the way to a full ...
Recently I began studying for the 70-400, System Center Operations Manager 2007, Configuration. Before I was told that we needed someone certified in SCOM I didn't even know what it was! I began like every student does. I went to www.google.com. I learned that this was a very powerful tool that Microsoft has developed which is part of the System Center product line. This particular piece of software focuses on monitoring and recovery of systems. So instead of realizing that a server is offline, you ...
This is a unknown issue with Certificates in BizTalk Server. You see the error every time when you open or save send port configuration, it won't affect the functionality, but very annoying. It usually happens when you remotedly log on to a BizTalk server at which the "Other People Certificate Store" is not initialized. Microsoft has an article talking about this issue, and it suggests to initialized the "Other People Certificate Store" during the Group configuration. However, if you have your BizTalk ...
Someone on Serverfault noticed that the TechNet article “Network Ports Used by Message Queuing” states MSMQ over HTTP(S) requires TCP port 1801: Delivery mechanism Required ports HTTP TCP port 1801 The TCP port that is used for HTTP traffic by the Message Queuing Server which has the HTTP Support feature enabled. Lately i have seen the below remarks coming through in the communities, Get Latest does not work in TFS I always have to use Get Specific version to get the server changes on my local Why get latest misses updating some files while get specific works I’ll be using the TFS API to show you how the “Get Latest” is suppose to work and show you how you can avoid getting in a situation where you might have to use “Get Specific” to get the latest version of your workspace. I would assume that you know the ...

In our environment most of developers use SQL Server 2008,but in production we have SQL Server 2005, and some databases still have compatibility level 80(SQL server 2000) It sometimes causes problems E.g. the SQL wtitten on SQL Server 2008 INSERT INTO[dbo].[SiteIds] ([SiteID], [SiteCode],[ParentID]) VALUES (11,'ChildOfXX',(select [SiteID] from [SiteIds] where SiteCode='XX')) GO on SQL Server 2005 caused Msg 1046, Level 15, State 1, Line 5 Subqueries are not allowed in this context.
I have a need for a highly responsive web page that must at least appear to be "pushed" information from the server as it happens, much like you'd see with an HTTP protocol based chat window. The client will utilize JavaScript, and will use JQuery and its UI plugins, and will use its AJAX support to call the requests that will only return when there is data to be "pushed". I know HTML 5 includes support for WebSockets, but I feel it is too soon to rely on them, as the spec is not yet finished and ...
In a number of talks I’ve given, including a session at last year’s Microsoft BI Conference, I’ve mentioned that if you’re not looking at partner offerings in the Microsoft Business Intelligence ecosystem, then you’re not getting the full Microsoft BI picture. This rubs two ways: Microsoft BI may look misleadingly deficient, in comparison to its competitors, if partner solutions are not taken into consideration If you’re an MS BI user and you’re not looking at partner products, your MS BI investment ...
I purchased Office 365 subscription recently, and wanted to bind my own domain, because wanted to use e-mail address like alias@some_custom_domain.com If you want to use custom domains, manual page suggest to change name server records for your domain to ns1.bdm.microsoftonline.com and ns2.bdm.microsoftonline.com. After doing this you can use aliases with your domain for Exchange mail and Lync. If you don’t want to change by any reasons name servers for your domain, just go through steps: 1) open ...
The keynote session for the morning was a mixture of things. It started with an all-female rock band singing Cold Play’s “Viva la Vida”, then had all partners-of-the-year winners parade on stage, and then we got into the specific messaging part. There were five separate keynotes this morning from different business units within Microsoft. First up was Cloud. Note that I didn’t say Azure, although that’s part of it. Azure is the public cloud, but Microsoft talked up the Private Cloud a lot at this ...
MvcScaffolding is a tremendous productivity improvement for MVC developers. Earlier this year, Steve Sanderson posted the definitive 7-part series on MvcScaffolding which is a must-read for anyone serious about doing scaffolding. The best part about the scaffolding infrastructure is that MvcScaffolding is actually built on top of another package called T4Scaffolding. T4Scaffolding can be used as the basis for *any* scaffolding – not just MVC projects. To that end, we can enjoy the same power of MvcScaffolding ...
Instead of making a list here of what requirements or needs for hardware hosts exist, I’ll make it plain and simple: CPU, memory and network links. Those are the most important things in a virtualization host and is all well documented in build guides across the internet. What I would to talk about is the following: Whitebox vs. Branded servers! Throughout the years I’ve been pretty much brainwashed (no kidding) that in a professional, production environment you only use “real” server hardware. And ...

Today it will be a concise post, but I hope quite helpful and informative. As most SSIS developers know SSIS Expressions are used to drive several key tidbits of a package components as the Conditional Split, Package Variables value assignments, Derived Column Transformation, form a SQL statement for Execute SQL task, drive precedence constraints, set package properties as connection string for example and more. So it is hard to underestimate the importance of the SSIS Expressions for a SSIS developer. ...

Hi there, Recently we had a requirement to integrate a RESTful Service with BizTalk Server. Well no biggie. You can use WCF – Custom Adapter and use webHTTP binding and add a webHttp Endpoint behavior. Wala. Easy to say, little bit tricky to do. That all is fine, but what if you want to have a polling receive location which needs to go and do an HTTP GET to a RESTful Service. Aahh!! That’s even more trickier. Bunch of you reading this post would have already thought about some or other way of doing ...

Giovanni Bassi published the original NuGet package for LINQ to Twitter (L2T), which I'm appreciative of. Since then, I have yet to do a release myself, but that is changing now. The current version of LINQ to Twitter is stable enough for a release, so the time is right. I think there are a few aspects of a LINQ to Twitter NuGet package that aren't as simple as point at a project and your done, so I'll document my process here in case anyone else is interested. Getting Started I had played around ...

At http://searchsecurity.techtarget.co.uk/tip/How-to-stop-SQL-injection-and-prevent-data-compromises there is a free download on measures to combat SQL Injection Attack. (free registration is required).

One very important thing to note is that SQL Injection Attack is not confined to IIS / SQL Server but has occurred on many non-Microsoft systems.

In my current job as a Senior ALM Consultant, part of what I do is help organizations get TFS set up and configured. While a single server installation is pretty easy (and using the basic configuration to install TFS on Windows 7 is even easier), there are a few pitfalls and points of frustration when setting TFS up in a two-server configuration. For the purposes of this discussion, I am assuming the following setup: - A database server (Data Tier) with SQL 2008 R2 to house the TFS Databases, Reporting ...

Developers might write good code, but no matter how good they are the result will always have bugs in it. It's up to the testers in the team to make sure the final product is as bug-free as it can be. Deciding what to test Within a project there's normally no official documentation produced, no official record of what the project should accomplish. The closest thing we get to documentation is the greenlight presentation slides (I'll be covering the greenlight process in a later post). This means ...

I have today a little problem to parse in js a DateTime object, which I serialized to json in the acion method on the server by

return Json(messages);

In javascript, the date looks that: /Date(1309936900864)/

To parse the date in js I have used:

var parsedDate = new Date(parseInt(messages[i].CreatedDate.replace("/Date(", "").replace(")/",""), 10));

There comes a time when computers die. So it was with our HP MediaSmart Home Server. At the age of 4, I was not expecting it to die. Oops. It has never really been an easy life before the death of that machine. It’s anemic 512MB of memory got upgraded to 2GB. The 500MB primary drive got expanded with two 1TB drives. The power supply fan started sounding like my lawn mower, so it had to be replaced. Things seemed stable until the primary drive croaked – and me unable to locate the recovery disk – ...
