Recently I discovered the colorful world of comic books. In the past I've read comics a few times but never really got into them. When I wanted to start a collection I decided either video games or comics yet stayed away from comics because I am less familiar with them. In any case, I stopped by my local comic shop and picked up a few comics and a few trade paperbacks. After reading them and understanding their basic flow I began to enjoy not only the stories but the art styles hiding behind those ...

That it seems my blog is more of poor me or pity me or I deserve a job blog. Hmmm I wont say, I have not winned here as I have used this blog to vent my frustration on the whole out of work thing (lack of money, self worth, family issues and the never end bills coming my way) but, it was also me trying to reach to others in the same boat as well as advertising, hay I am out here, employers. It was also said, that I don’t have any thing listed here on me, like a cover letter or resume. Well there ...
Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court may decide whether to hear a case that could have a lasting impact on computer and video games. The case before the Court involves a law passed by the state of California attempting to criminalize the sale of certain computer and video games. Two previous courts rejected the California law as unconstitutional, but soon the Supreme Court could have the final say. Whatever the Court's ruling, we must be prepared to continue defending our rights now and in the future. To ...
MVP in Virtual Machines Last week, on 1st April, I received an e-mail from Microsoft letting me know that I had been presented with a 2010 Microsoft® MVP Award for outstanding contributions in Virtual Machine technical communities during the past year. It was an honour to be nominated, and is a great reflection on the vibrancy of the UK user group community which made this possible. Virtualisation for developers, not just IT Pros I consider it a special honour as my expertise in virtualisation is ...

Saturday morning, I got up, got dressed and took a 7-minute walk up to the Apple Store in New York’s Meatpacking District to pick up my reserved iPad. This precinct, which borders Greenwich Village (where I live and grew up) was, when I was a kid, a very industrial and smelly neighborhood during the day and a rough neighborhood at night. So imagine my sense of irony as I walked up Hudson Street towards 14th Street, to go wait in line with a bunch of hipsters to buy an iPad on launch day. Numerous ...

I stole that from the back of a T-shirt I saw at the Orlando Code Camp 2010. This was my first code camp and my first time volunteering for an event like this as well. It was an awesome day. I cannot begin to count the “aaahh”, “I did-not-know I could do that”, in the crowds and for myself. I think it was a great day of learning for everyone at all levels. All of the presenters were different and provided great insights into the topics they were presenting. Here’s a list of the ones that I attended. ...
In Cnet today I saw something interesting: According to Sony, it plans to release PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.21 on Thursday to achieve one goal: eliminate the "Other OS" option currently available in all pre-Slim models of the video game console. The feature allowed PS3 owners to install an operating system--in almost every case, Linux--onto the PlayStation 3. No surprise. l Sony is a company heavily invested with legacy IP (games, all that music and Blueray). They know that content can be ...
At my workplace .Net developers get pretty much the same equipment. A decent Dell workstation / Desktop, mine is a Dell Precision 390. One dual core 2.40 GHz. Eight GB RAM. Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. Two Dell 20.1 Monitors. I'm happy with this. The machine is about 3 years old but still runs with some decent speed. New developers are getting a Dell workstation with dual quad processors. I just put in a request for myself and three other developers for an upgraded video card and two additional monitors, ...
Microsoft is continuing to make significant investments in Datacenter technology and is focused on solving issues such as long lead times, significant up-front costs and over capacity. Enter the world of modular Datacenters and ITPACs – IT Pre-Assembled Components. In simple terms – air handling and IT units which are pre-assembled (looking somewhat like a container) and then installed on concrete bases. Each unit can hold between 400 and 2500 servers (which means many more virtual machines depending ...

Michelle Juett is one of the more interesting people I know, even though we’ve never met face to face. She’s part artist, part techie and all cool. Recently I've decided, in true nerd fashion, to collect either comic books or video games. Considering I'm much more versed in the technological arts and not in ACTUAL art, I thought collecting old video games would be an interesting venture. After all, I am a self-described compulsive shopper (my bank statement at the end of the month has a purchase every few days). (Don't worry, I'm not in debt and still pay my bills on time!) I went to a local video game store in Stevens Point called Gaming Generations ...

In my office, I have a wall mounted monitor who's whole purpose in life is to display perfmon stats from our various servers. And on a fairly regular basis, I have folks walk by asking what the lines mean. After providing the requisite explaination about CPU utilization, disk I/O bottlenecks, etc. this is usually followed by some blank stares from the user in question, and a distillation of all of our engineering wizardry down to the phrase 'So when the red line goes up that's bad then?' This of ...
I was happy with Windows 7 at the beginning, until I started to add in the peripherals. Windows 7 was never able to recognize any of my PCI video card (I know, I know, we should be in the DVI age). Anyway, I went through another 4 days of trouble setting my computer up with dual monitor in XP (also did a bunch of other things like getting rid of my sound card and taking the computer off RAID. Kind of feel stupid to put the computer on RAID in the first place because now I can have 2 drives: double ...

In this post we'll look at the AlphaBlend() api and how it can be used for semi-transparent blitting. AlphaBlend() takes a source device context and a destination device context (DC) and combines the bits in such a way that it gives a transparent effect. Follow the links for the msdn documentation. So lets take a image like, and AlphaBlend() it on our window. The code to do so is below, (under the WM_PAINT message of WndProc) HBITMAP hBitmap=NULL, hBitmapOld=NULL; HDC hMemDC=NULL; BLENDFUNCTION bf; ...

Last Wednesday, after many UPS delivery failures, I received P90X in the mail. P90X is a series of DVD's and a nutrition guide you use to shed pounds and gain muscle. So yesterday I got the bad news that yet another XBOX 360 had failed us. This time is was the video port that went bad. This makes like 5 or 6 failed XBOXs, I’ve lost count. Those things are turds. There is no way I was having another one fixed because they’ll just send me a different turd edition that has been fixed that will probably break down again in 6 months. So I took everything I still had worth salvaging (controllers, hard drive, games, wireless) and traded them in. We use to be a 2 XBOX ...

Remember the Process Viewer that we worked on a few months back? I was wondering how to display the applications icons, the way task manager does. A small icon beside the application name gives it a pleasant look. So how do you extract the icon from an executable? Well, there's an API for that (pun). ExtractIconEx() is the function we use to get a handle to the applications icon. It's a simple API, just give it the full path to the executable and it returns an HICON (icon handle). So I went back ...
Yesterday I picked up a nice package from TinyCLR.com. Yes, it is yet another robot (third in fact), but this time it runs .NET! How freaking cool is that! This robot is controlled by FEZ Mini board that runs .NET Micro Framework. What’s interesting is that this board has pin-out compatible with Basic Stamp from Parallax. You can also uses it easily on a breadboard for prototyping (just like Boarduino). TinyCLR.com also offers a larger board called FEZ Domino that has pin-out compatible with Arduino ...
Between working on Pong and work, I've recently taken up working with the Unreal Development Kit (UDK). Back before Unreal Tournament 3 came out I started toying with the Unreal Tournament 2004 editor and didn't get very far. When Unreal Tournament 3 came out, I grabbed a copy simply to play on PS3 and wasn't too big of a fan of some of the gameplay choices Epic had made. I returned the game and went on my way. However as time passed I realized I really enjoyed the look and feel of the engine and ...

I hope Stevie Wonder (Steve Ballmer) of MSFT was right when he proclaimed that 7 was a luck number for MSFT. It better be, 'cause I am already loving the Windows 7 experience and some more WinMo oops now WinPho (I coined that term remember that :)) won't hurt either. I love the Bioshock series (guess it's a series now that there are two of them), I really do. I've completed them both, and am tempted to start the first one over and do through them to get the other ending (won't tell you which one I got the first time). After I'd completed the second one, I began to analyze why I like them so much. Is it the first-person shooter? Nah, I like FPS but that's not really a big deal.
