There’s been a lot of press in the last 24 hours concerning MSN China’s apparent (and now acknowledged) theft of code and copying of design from Taiwan’s Plurk microblogging service for the beta of its own Juku service. Turns out the work was outsourced to an external vendor which, in turn, was the source of the plagiarism. Microsoft, in a public statement, said “in the wake of this incident, Microsoft and our MSN China joint venture will be taking a look at our practices around applications code ...

This week, TimeWarner, completed the spinoff of the online service that was at one point the initial part of its corporate name…AOL. TimeWarner believes that the online portal is not core to its business, and that its non market-leadership would be best cured by independent management. Should Microsoft do a similar spinoff of MSN? Is “the butterfly” doing well under Redmond’s PC software-oriented management? Despite an impending re-design, and a respectable market share in the US and global markets, ...

Microsoft makes an excellent digital music player (the Zune HD), a well-crafted networked storage and backup solution (Windows Home Server), a strong DVR/digital entertainment hub (Windows Media Center) and perhaps the industry leading gaming console (Xbox 360) which itself has a growing number of digital media capabilities. But can they all get along? That was my question almost a year ago, when I returned from the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show, which was riddled with a variety of incompatible, ...

Want to know how the future of healthcare looks like? You can see it here on YouTube. The video shows a heart in 3D (at about 60s of the video) and how it can be manipulated with the new software. E.g. showing only the vessels of the heart to look for signs of a heart attack. Way cool.

I’ve had a rash of hard drive failures at home recently. In one case, having a backup of the files in the cloud, saved me from losing 40 gigs of data. The first hard drive that went bad was one that I was using with my Media Center PC. I had repurposed an internal drive from my server by putting it into a USB drive enclosure. Media Center was using it to store the recorded TV video files. Since these files weren’t that critical, I wasn’t worried about backing them up. When this drive failed, Media ...

I’ve came across this interesting thread on Arduino forum about using IKEA DIODER and other RGB LED strips to build mood/ambient light. The industry it moving towards identity standards, and with the recent release of Windows Identity Foundation (fka Geneva), and the beta of SharePoint 2010, it’s important to take a look at the direction of how identity is being normalized into a “service” within the SharePoint object model. With SPS 2010, the SPUser object is now a claims identity. Identity management has been normalized to a approach that internally uses an STS that takes all “provider” or external STS identities, then creates ...
Interestingly I had two instances last week when I thought different parts of Microsoft were re-inventing the wheel. The first was while listening to Episode 496 of Dot Net Rocks, where they were talking about project Trident from Microsoft Research. My first thought as they were describing the "visual workflows" was that MS Research had re-invented SSIS. Then as they described the versioned catalogue of workflows it sounded more like the way DTS used to store it's packages. But when they started ...

A great VIDEO series on all the nice effects (and functionality) you can achieve with jQuery JavaScript library for those who know NOTHING about it. jQuery is a very powerful library. This text is based on the Chris Pels video and code located here. ASP.NET Membership mechanism allows to use the build-in server tables to store and retrieve user data. By default, this mechanism can only be used with SQL Server database to which Microsoft provides suitable MembershipProvider class. To change the text of a softkey menu item, all you have to do is pretend that they are buttons. Well, they are specialized buttons in any case. So in order to change its property (in this case the 'text') you will have to use the TBBUTTONINFO structure along with TB_GETBUTTONINFO and TB_SETBUTTONINFO messages. Lets dive into the code: Note: Error checking is omitted for obvious reasons. TCHAR szText[128] = TEXT(""); TBBUTTONINFO tbi; ZeroMemory(&tbi, sizeof(tbi)); tbi.cbSize = sizeof(tbi); tbi.dwMask ...
