Calling Kathleen Sanders a gamer geek, while true, is really an understatement. She’s unlike pretty much anyone else I’ve met in my career. So, it’s not surprising that this interview is a bit different as well. Check out these NINE Questions with Kathleen Sanders, and then check out her blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/xna/ 1. Where are you from? Originally from Flint, Michigan. I got to Seattle by way of San Francisco, though. 2. What do you do / Who do you work for / What is your product? Give us ...
We had the first online version of the Ft Lauderdale developer group meeting tonight. Eighteen people were online but i was the only one with a web camera… I hope more start getting the video cranked up! The topic was Introduction to MVC and was suppose to be given by Jim Zimmerman out of Tampa but he called at 5:30 (for the 6:30 meeting) reporting that his laptop power brick was toast and he was out of juice. He had tried to get another one but at this point he was dead in the water because his ...
Warning – This post gives away massive spoilers to the new Wolverine movie. If you don’t want to ruin the movie for yourself, stop reading this now. I have a love/hate relationship with Marvel comic based movies. Spiderman 1, loved it, Spiderman 2, was ok. Spiderman 3, well I think we know how I felt about that one. XMen started good in the series, ended a little weak. Hulk and Iron Man I was never really into, so I had no major expectations. And then comes Wolverine. Let’s start with the good. The ...

XPMode(XPM) for Windows7 came as quite a surprise as this feature wasn't available in the Beta stages of the Windows 7 releases. I’m a big fan of PlayOn form MediaMall Technologies which is an application that allows you to view videos from popular sites like Hulu, CBS and Netflix on your Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or DLNA-compliant television or set-top-box. I’m also a big fan of Channel9, the “official” unofficial source for developer information from Microsoft. In a recent release, MediaMall implemented a PlugIn API for PlayOn that allows a developer to add new media sources to the PlayOn menu. Developers have already added ...
I don’t do much web development these days (with the exception of when I am thinking about Windows Azure) and I certainly haven’t battled with complex html+JavaScript across multiple browsers for a long, long while. On the other hand, my colleague Mike Ormond is pretty immersed in such things and only today (29th April 2009) published a video on an Introduction to the IE8 Developer Tools and yesterday announced a competition for IE8 developers (Win an Xbox Elite + fame!). I was curious (as was Mike) ...

This month I have been working hard at providing XNA support for the Micro Framework. Sometimes I wonder how I get myself into these things. I entered another contest, Dream, Build, Play, where you or a team write a game for some cool prizes. When I was reading through the XNA documentation and I was thinking that the paradigm of writing games fits some embedded projects a lot better than WPF that the Micro Framework is using now. Perhaps not for all applications, but for my project is felt like ...
The only bad thing I have noticed as a result of running the RC1 (7100) build of Windows 7 is some strangeness in the Aero UI. This is on a Dell e4300. About 3 times over the last 48 hours, my window frames go to hell. I can press where the minimize, maximize and close icons should be and they behave correctly, however the corner is a blurred mess as is the rest of the window frame. I am using the video driver which Win7 installed so I may have to try the Dell version. When I went to install it, ...

A week ago Brian Loesgen was in town presenting at the Developer Summit here in Stockholm. Brian was kind enough to present at the BizTalk User Group in Sweden, and we pulled our resources to deliver a joint session on BizTalk Server Development best practices and BizTalk Server Administration best practices. The presentation was recorded and should be available on Channel 9 shortly. The next evening we had a second BizTalk User Group meeting with Paolo Salvatory who is a BizTalk Ranger (I know they ...

Youtube - You know that site with videos and all. Yeah! It turns out that its quite popular and you happen to visit and use it quite often. Instead of just searching and playing here are some top Youtube URL tricks that you should know about: 1. View high quality videos Youtube gives you the option to switch to high quality videos for some of the videos, however you can check if a video is available in high quality format by appending ‘&fmt=18'(stereo, 480 x 270 resolution) or ‘&fmt=22'(stereo, ...

Update: I updated the installation instructions to make it clearer that you need the WPF toolkit and SQL Server express before you can run the application. TechDays Switzerland is always a very nice venue, and this year in Geneva and in Bern were no exceptions. For me it was a special occasion, because I gave the same talk in French in Geneva, and in German in Bern, and I had never done this before. I think it went well. Altogether approximately 450 people saw this talk. I think I will possibly reuse ...

For years there has been debate between applications deployed to the desktop and applications accessed via the web browser. Like political opponents the debate has been fierce and each side evolving over the years. Deployment complexity and richness of the user interface have always been two of the central battles fought. Each technology has made dramatic improvement including things like Click Once to ease deployment of Smart Client's to AJAX to make web applications more responsive and user friendly. ...
Yesterday, I took the longest plane ride of my life so far. (Yes, I know some of you international rock star types have taken longer, but this is my story.) Eight and a half hours (5 time zones) later and I’m sitting in Honolulu. I knew I was in for an adventure when I got to my seat and noticed the “in-flight entertainment system” which consisted of personal monitors for every seat and on demand movies and video games. woot! I had some work to do, but I had also spent a good chunk of my Easter weekend ...

So I have got most of the drivers for XP working fine and things are running great. Only once did XP crash while I was installing the drivers but that was maybe because I installed the wrong one. I was having trouble finding the right driver for my video card, ATI Radeon 4570. Anyways, to find the drivers I searched google and again came about many posts related to the topic. Tried the drivers one by one, some failed and some didn't. But in the end I came about a post saying that Dell has released ...

I use the free tool MS SyncToy to do simple backups. It's even scheduled on the Wife/kids PC to run nightly. I upgraded to SyncToy 2.0 an noticed on the install that it now includes the MS Sync Framework. I suppose if you've got "sync" in your name, it's hard to get away from dog-fooding that one. You can checkout the video webcast of one of the providers, the file sync provider, by Ashish Shah ...

At MIX 2009, the Expression Blend team cam up with a new concept called Behaviors. In fact, the only thing new is the way that the Behaviors are packed. For those of you unfamiliar with the Nike+iPod, it's a "device which measures and records the distance and pace of a walk or run." Sensor goes in your shoes, connect the receiver to your iPod and the iPod displays how fast and how far you have been running. When you sync your iPod with your PC the data is automatically uploaded to the Nike+ website and you can easily track your runs on a easy to use web interface. One of my biggest concerns before purchasing was how to replace the battery and how ...

[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... This is the rather grand title of a WebCast I've recorded recently which tries to illustrate where the return on investment comes after moving to a SOA strategy. The video is on Digital Forum: Visualizing SOA ROI , and the Open Source proof of concept it references is on CodePlex: ESBSimpleSamples. If you’re a fan of the Big Bang Theory (and if you aren’t, you *should* be), you probably remember the genius that was Rock-Paper-Scissors-Lizard-... Many have seen this and probably assumed the genius was created by the writers of the show. However, and this being one of the awesome aspects of Big Bang Theory, the reality is that the game has been around since at least 2005 on the internet; the writers simply taking a little-known aspect of geek culture and incorporating it into the script, to ...
