When The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) decided they needed a web application to allow easy access to the expenses management system they initially went to ASP.NET web forms combined with CSS. The outcome, however, was not satisfying enough as it appeared bland and lacked in richness. So in order to enrich the UI and give the web application some glitz, Visual WebGui was selected. Visual WebGui provided the needed richness and the familiar Windows look and feel also made the transition ...

Introduction Microsoft recently released the Kinect for Windows SDK Beta 2. It contains many enhancements and fixes that can be found here. The only problem with it is that a lot of current demo applications no longer function properly. Today, I’m going to walk you through a typical scenario of upgrading a Kinect application built with Beta 1 to Beta 2. Note: This tutorial covers WPF, but you can use the same techniques for WinForms. 1) Fix the references Let’s start with a fairly popular Kinect ...

One of the cool things about HTML5 is the ability to play audio/video files out of the box without the dependency on plugins. Earlier I had written about HTML5 Video and the fallback using Silverlight for non-supported scenarios Visual Studio 2010 SP1 has decent support for HTML5, in terms of intellisense, validation etc., But, one issue that is constantly faced when using the HTML5 Video tag in an ASP.NET Application (Web/MVC) built using Visual Studio is that, the videos doesn’t play when running ...

NuGet is a topic that I have been hearing about for a while, especially from Clark Sell. I figured it was about time to take a dive into it and see what it was all about. The description of NuGet makes it seem like magic to add dependencies to your code projects. Of course there is always an explanation for how the trick works. In this case it is by using a package and a definition of how resources should be added to your project. One of the interesting aspects of using NuGet is the UI. The fact ...

Today is a weird day. I just got the news, as I woke up, that Steve Jobs passed away last night. This news affected me more than I thought it would. I felt the need to write about these emotions, and about my history with Apple. I was informed that my presentation on “Getting Started with the Kinect SDK” is now live on UserGroup.tv. The video quality is not that great, but that is my fault. Our camera quit working and someone had to record the session with an iPad2. Abstract: This talk is also designed for people who want to get started developing with the official Microsoft Kinect SDK. I will walk the user through downloading the bits and starting a new project. We will take a look at several great free open-source tools ...

So its been a few weeks since Microsoft’s Build conference, where they unveiled Windows 8 and shared what the developer story will be. I had blogged about Day 1 of the conference here, but I wanted to share some video I took with my colleagues Winson Woo and Jim Russell as my thoughts now that a bit of time has lapsed. So first, a video captured right after we got our hands on the Samsung tablet given to all attendees. Yes the tablet is nice, but this conference is all about the OS. Windows 8 as ...

I'm sitting is a nice new hotel in Redmond - the Hotel Sierra is well worth considering if you are staying in the area. I'm sleep-deprived and jet-lagged, and it's raining hard outside, but hey, I just got to play with one of the Samsung tablets they handed out at Build, and was not disappointed. Microsoft is doing something trully remarkable with Win8 Metro. On the other hand, I am deeply disappointed with the UK flag carrier, British Airways. Indeed, I've lost patience with them big-time. So forgive ...
Programming for Metro Metro is the future http://zd.net/rnT9VZ .NET is for old apps. WinRT replaces WPF & WCF. XAML is big. There were no Silverlight sessions. HTML 5 and Javascript ( Blend for HTML) are back in fashion – I wont dwell on this because web apps are (inconsistently) simplistic in concept and over-complex in development. Yes, all those XAML skills are portable, Silverlight (RIP) apps can run as Metro apps with a bit of fidgeting with namespaces – you just need to know what controls ...
I've just installed the Windows 8 Developer Preview. These are some first impressions: Installation of the preview was quite smooth and didn't take too long. It took a few minutes to extract the files onto a virtual image, but feature installation then seemed to happen almost instantaneously (according to the feedback on the screen). The installation routine then went into a preparation cycle that took two or three minutes. Then the virtual machine rebooted and after a couple of minutes more preparation, ...

I have to say that it has been awhile (just over a year actually) since I've updated my blog. I feel embarassed. On the other hand, I have been quite busy - so it's not like I don't do it because I am lazy (well I am somewhat lazy), but it's because time is somewhat a scarce resource. But... I will try to see if I can muster up some moments to be active with my blog. With that said, last month (August 5th and 6th) St. Louis held the 4th annual conference of the St. Louis Day of .NET. It was a rousing ...
I was really excited when I heard Red Gate wanted a review of their memory profiler done. I have been a fan of Red Gate products for years… being first exposed to their products via reflector a few years ago – as someone who has never done memory profiling before, I was also excited to go a bit deeper into .Net memory management. Why Memory Profiler – Isn’t the point of .Net that it manages the memory for you? Before getting into the nuts and bolts of the profiler, you might ask yourself – why use ...

I am a reformed former JavaScript hater. In the 90s and early 2000s I muddled through JavaScript compatibility issues, poor performance and a lack of development & debugging tools. When ASP.NET came out, promising to hide me from the complexity of browser incompatibilities, I fully embraced server-side web development. This approach may have worked in 2002, but it does not today. The world's expectations have been reset by Ajax, Google Maps, mobile web sites, high performance JavaScript engines, ...
There are plenty of posts and articles out there that provide retrospectives of, and pay homage to, Steve Jobs’ tenure as Apple CEO. I’m not an expert on Apple or Jobs, and this is not one of those posts. But Steve Jobs’ resignation from the CEO post does mark the end of a related era I know something about. It’s the era that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs defined together. And now that both of them have ended their CEO runs and receded to roles as Chairmen of the Board, it’s important to consider just ...
Introduction: One of the concerns that I keep hearing from customers is, “We can’t deploy Silverlight because it won’t run on a tablet.” I usually reply to that question stating, “What do you mean it can’t run on a tablet?” They usually looked puzzled and say, “You mean Silverlight *CAN* run on a tablet?” Yes, there are many devices that Silverlight can run on. Today we are going to take a look at the Motion CL900 Tablet. FYI: I have no affiliation with Motion Computing. Why this tablet? When I first ...

I hope this link stays up: http://tekpub.com/view/conc... This video explains in a very clear way, how to use Ninject and what IoC (inversion of control) and DI (dependency injection) are. Last month at the Microsoft WPC I had the opportunity to see Richard Branson do a live Q&A during one of the morning keynotes. I honestly knew very little about Branson, other than he headed up Virgin – which was, what, a music, mobile phone, and airline company that was also looking into space travel? My education into all things Branson was about to begin. You can see the entire video of the Q&A from the WPC site here, but what was really awesome was the initial intro video that gave a ...

I’ve written about Visual Studio LightSwitch several times in this blog and in my Redmond Review column, including this month’s piece, “LightSwitch: The Answer to the Right Question.” All throughout, I’ve been pretty clear in my support of the product.
