Wow, it has been awhile, so let's do some catching up. In January 2011 I joined a local gym and have since been pretty dedicated to that and work leaving me little to no time for personal projects (although I've lost almost 40 lbs!). This includes both this blog, posting at Gamasutra, the Deep Fried Devcast, and anything else. Add to this my recent increased interest in music and guitar and I've been left with very little extra time. In fact, I've changed so much about the way I spend my time that ...

In a number of talks I’ve given, including a session at last year’s Microsoft BI Conference, I’ve mentioned that if you’re not looking at partner offerings in the Microsoft Business Intelligence ecosystem, then you’re not getting the full Microsoft BI picture. This rubs two ways: Microsoft BI may look misleadingly deficient, in comparison to its competitors, if partner solutions are not taken into consideration If you’re an MS BI user and you’re not looking at partner products, your MS BI investment ...
Last week I was at the Microsoft WPC conference in Los Angeles. I’ve been to other Microsoft developer conferences like Tech Ed and PDC before, but this was my first WPC and it was a great experience. For one thing, the target audience is blatantly business, sales, and marketing. It was a weird feeling attending a Microsoft conference and not knowing *anybody* (although some familiar faces were found). I have links below to notes I made for the individual days of the conference, but I wanted to point ...

A new release of Microsoft All-In-One Code Framework is available on July 13th. We expect that its 17 new code samples would reduce developers’ efforts in solving the following typical programming tasks. Download address: http://1code.codeplex.com/r... Alternatively, you can download the code samples using Sample Browser or Sample Browser Visual Studio extension. They give you the flexibility to search samples, download samples on demand, manage the downloaded samples in a centralized ...
To kick off the WPC earlier today, Microsoft brought in Japanese artists New Order. They were fantastic, blending a version of the video below with some WPC-specific shots, and then coming live to the stage to perform a great dance number. The version of the song at WPC was in English, but still sounds great in its original language (if anyone finds video from the WPC performance, please post a link in the comments!) Update: Someone pointed out this video as well, and the performance at WPC used ...
I really dig video games. It is the reason why I love working with technology. I don’t play games like I used to, but I try and keep up by reading the latest news on the web and by watching Review on the Run. The other day, my video game hobby crossed paths with my professional life with a review on Reviews on the Run where two of the reviewers, Jose Sanchez and Ben Silverman, did a review on a web game that I reference in my recent HTML5 presentations: The World’s Biggest Pacman. I was really excited ...
There comes a time when computers die. So it was with our HP MediaSmart Home Server. At the age of 4, I was not expecting it to die. Oops. It has never really been an easy life before the death of that machine. It’s anemic 512MB of memory got upgraded to 2GB. The 500MB primary drive got expanded with two 1TB drives. The power supply fan started sounding like my lawn mower, so it had to be replaced. Things seemed stable until the primary drive croaked – and me unable to locate the recovery disk – ...
As I already blogged a while back, native code has been on the lips of many since TechEd 2011. Microsoft seems very committed to actually putting the language to use again after all these years of radio silence. What I find very inspiring about this interview is that Microsoft has a number of internal ...

Everybody are raving about new HTML5, the latest changes old HTML went thru. What that means to us, how our work is going to be affected? Finally I found some time to explore the new changes. What HTML5 is bringing new? W3C site provides a good overview of new features HTML5 has to offer. http://www.w3schools.com/ht... One new, great feature is support for video and audio. They can be easy integrated into a page and additional software will not be required. Only drawback is that these ...
Not too long ago, I was hauling a 20” system, not going to call it a laptop as it was not meant to be on my lap, and not a notebook as it was more a historical folio sized thing. Anyway, then the transition to a more powerful system that would be smaller, so an ASUS G51JX came to me. A system 15.6” with 500GB HDD and 16GB RAM with an i7 first generation. I still have it with me, but it is a tad painful to carry when travelling. Then a MacBook Pro 13”, great system and all, love the battery life, ...
Thanks to Brian Hurst and Microsoft for the fantastic Ken Schwaber/Richard Hundhausen talk at the Reston, Virginia Microsoft facilities in April. It was refreshing to see Ken Schwaber take a fundamentally different approach to "the Scrum talk". He focused on the body of software development research, and how the results of this research leads us towards certain sounds practices - which are also tenants of Scrum. I will blog more about some of the key points I took away from the talk, but for now ...

A new power tool that promises to redefine the way you debug. You would need the high end Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate edition to run this power tool, the idea is to enhance the debugging experience and present code in bubble windows as you navigate from code in one page to code in another page. This should let u traverse through the stack easily, what more you can save the debug bubble canvas session, add notes, etc. The power tool will be available for download shortly. The video is promising indeed… ...

Been a busy week for me, wish it was full of XNA stuff and that is why I’m busy (and that the notes are late…again) but not the case. I’m just going to have to figure out a better way of integrating the XNA Notes into some of the stuff going on lately or maybe change my life situation so these things aren’t going on. I’m working on figuring it out both ways. But you don’t come here to read about my personal stuff, you come to see what the XNA community has been up to! So without further ado, here’s ...

This week has been an interesting one. Lots of ups and downs in the XNA Community and lots of things that we’re not sure yet if it’s an up or down.
