This has been kind of a crappy week for me. Kids are all puking like crazy so I’m up most nights taking care of them. Fun times being a day! (I have 4 kids in case you didn’t know!). And while my kids have been puking, the community has been busy puking too. Puking up a ton of awesomeness! Yeah…probably not the best analogy but I’m tired. I did want to take the time to point out one thing that resonated loudly with me this week. You’ll see some interviews with Kris Steele by Steven Hurdle. In that ...
Last week at MIX11, Preview 4 of WCF Web API was released. If you missed it, you can watch the video here. One way to get Preview 4 and start playing with it is to download it here. However, an even easier way to to just grab the bits from NuGet: When you download the latest Web API bits, there are a couple of sample applications that show off the latest features of the Web API (these are in the CodePlex download, not the NuGet packages). The first one is a Contact Manager “Simple” project which ...

HTML5 introduces markup-level functionality for rich graphics, animation and web multimedia. It also supports a richer web application functionality and extends the client capabilities with local storage. Many pundits see it as the next generation web - web 3.0 if you like - and an open standard replacement for propriety plug-ins, Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash. But, for all its new features, HTML5 is still only the end product. This article looks at HTML5 from the web programmer's point of ...
I haven't posted a recap lately, because the Virtual Brown Bag recordings weren't being uploaded for a while. That was fixed two weeks ago, so I had a lot of meetings to catch up on. Here's an all-you-can-eat brown bag buffet… March 3 Guest presenter Jim Christopher - creator of StudioShell, a deeply integrated PowerShell host available inside of Visual Studio 2010 and 2008. StudioShell exposes many of Visual Studio’s extensibility points in a simple and consistent way, and it makes the Visual Studio ...
MIX 11 happened this past week and I’m still trying to find and catch up on all the announcements changes that came from that. It looks like we can now use XNA on the web via Silverlight (and am I reading that we can do 3d?). We can now use Silverlight in our XNA projects with Windows Phone 7 (yay for having an easy way to make UI’s in XNA now!). And I’m still searching around to see if there were any other big news. The Silverlight + XNA news is pretty big because that opens up a lot of new game ...

For most of us, springtime is exciting. The warm weather and the sun puts us in a better mood and makes us want to venture out into the world. But as I am so familiar with, many people out there reach a critical mass and enter an almost depressive state during springtime. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had many (over 5) close friends reach out about the tough times they are going through. Each one expressing a loss of self worth and value due to a failure in a relationship. For some it was a poor ...

Since my blog is mainly about Silverlight, WPF and Windows Phone 7, I decided that I’d make a recap of today’s MIX 11 Event for those of you who missed it. I only included things that I thought were big enough to mention to not waste any time. Of course, you can check out the keynote yourself by visiting the MIX Site. MIX11 Day 2 – Windows Phone 7 – “Mango” update coming shortly. Microsoft showed a fan-made video that if enough people like it Microsoft will make it a Television commercial. They are ...
Microsoft announced about IE 10 Platform Preview 1 on the first day of MIX and made it available for download. What a crazy week! Big game releases from the XNA Community, podcasts, reviews, interviews, new educational content being posted and all sorts of upcoming titles that I’m excited about. Today is April Fool's day...and apparently I fooled quite a few people with my post earlier today! Sorry if you were outraged, concerned (or maybe you were happy and elated?) but I am not losing my MVP status. I'm still an XNA MVP and hope to remain one for as long as XNA is around. I really love the technology and this community! Something that was NOT an April fool's joke however, there are now two new XNA MVPs (well only two knew that I'm aware of, if there's more, please make yourself known!). ...

At TechEd India 2011 I presented on HTML5 Development with Visual Studio 2010 SP1. I wanted to cover the aspects that were discussed in my session. HTML5 1. HTML5 is the emerging but promising trend in web development 2. Some of the standards have got green signal i.e. they are candidate recommendations. 3. Some others are still work in progress. 4. This week was a busy one for the XNA Community and one that had a series of ups and downs. You might have noticed by now (or maybe you haven’t and I shouldn’t be pointing this out..) that I tend to only point out the ups. That’s very much on purpose and something I thought long and hard about before I started doing XNA Notes. It’s too easy to let the bad stuff spread like a virus and seem overwhelming (something to do with human nature and there’s probably a science and psychology behind it). When ...
I have started a new series on SilverlightShow.net called Producing and Consuming OData in a Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 application. I also want to thank SilverlightShow for giving me this opportunity to help other developers get up to ...

I was very excited when Microsoft released the Internet Explorer 9 Release Candidate. As far as I was concerned, this was another nail in the coffin for IE6 and step in the right direction for us .NET web developers as our base camp was finally starting to support the latest and greatest future-web standards. Unfortunately, my celebration was short lived as I soon hit a snag while loading up an HTML5 site I was building in Visual Studio 2010. The Mystery After updating Internet Explorer, I ran my ...

With GDC 2011 wrapping up there were a LOT of great interviews and posts with and about XNA and XBLIG and some of our more notorious developers. As BizTalk developers we all know that one of the common challenges is how to test your BizTalk solution once it is deployed to BizTalk. Hopefully most of us are using the BizUnit framework for testing, but we still have the limitation that it's a very Black Box test. (This is my first review as a part of the GeeksWithBlogs.net Influencers program. It’s a program in which I (and the others who have been selected for it) get the opportunity to check out new products and services and write reviews about them. We don’t get paid for this, but we do generally get to keep a copy of the software or retain an account for some period of time on the service that we review. In this case I received a copy of Red Gate Software’s ANTS Memory Profiler 7.0, which was released ...
Timothy recently posted “Microsoft Shows Off Radical New UI, Could Be Used In Windows 8” on Slashdot. I took such grave exception to his post that I found it necessary to my senses to write this blog. We need to go back many years to the days of hand cranked calculators and early main frame computers. These devices had singular purposes – they were “number crunchers” used to make accounting easier. The front facing display in early mainframes was “blinken lights.” The calculators did provide printing ...

This week has been a rough one. I’ve been sick and then in some kind of slump for my afternoon coding sessions. One of the popular HTML5 tags is the video tag. The ability to play videos without depending on a plugin is something that excites web developers to a great extent and no wonder you end up seeing video demos in all HTML5 conferences. Now, coming to HTML5 Video, the tag itself is simply <video id=”ID” src=”FILENAME.mp4/ogv/webm” > in the simplest form. This also means that the video needs to be H.256 encoded MP4 format or some of the other formats as mentioned above. For a detailed specification ...
