Tangible Thoughts SharePoint, MOSS? and all the other questions

Got this scoop from Microsoft Watch

There is a new server codenamed R2 that’s destined to be released sometime in the near future. Apparently it looks like an upgraded version of Windows Server 2003.

Here is what got me interested

“Microsoft officials have talked publicly a couple of times since this spring about which of the more than dozen feature packs that it plans to fold into R2. Among the ones that are definites, according to partners:

  • Active Directory Federation Services (a k a "Trustbridge")
  • Rights Management Server
  • SharePoint Portal Services Version 2
  • File Server Migration Toolkit
  • Network File System (NFS) support
  • Services for Unix (some, if not all features)
  • Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM)
  • 'Corral' Storage Resource Management”

Does anyone have any clarifications as to what exactly SharePoint Portal Services Version 2 is? The naming is very obscure.

Who knows.

SPS 2003 is already version 2.

WSS is really version 1 but is called in legal papers (or something like that) version 2.

There's never been a SharePoint Portal Services v 1.

So all that leaves us that it's probably a misprint and they mean WSS. The version we have now probably.

WSS seems to fit better into that list than SPS 2003 and I presume it just means it is already installed rather than you having to install it.

(All guess work)

"There's never been a SharePoint Portal Services v 1."

Then how is SPS 2003 already version 2? WSS is version 2, right, the upgrade to STS v1.0.

Surely SPS v2 means an upgrade to SPS 2003 (and hopefully an upgrade to WSS as well, but who knows).

If R2 is an update to Windows Server, it would make sense to update WSS along with it. Microsoft hasn't been very clear about where WSS stands, in the office realm (where Portal sits) or in the Windows Server world. Since it shipped with WSS I would think WSS would be updated along with Windows Server... not that I agree with that strategy as it just complicates the Sharepoint Technologies landscape...

It comes down to a lot of speculation.

I would think that if there is any update it would be to WSS,
primarlily because Microsoft doenst give away SharePoint Portal Server like it does WSS.

Still the terminology has mixed up the 2 (i.e. Portal and WSS), which from a Marketing perspective is 2 seperate products

Please help -

I am constantly in need of strong SPS 2003 Developers. (Whether thats version 2 or whatever!) I regularly have needs for Sharepoint developers within the UK (specifically Banking as well as large systems integrators.)

If you, or any friends or ex-colleagues may be interested in contract work in the future, please do contact me. Feel free to pass my details on to any relevant persons.

Many thanks.
