Sanath sent me the following link that exactly explains the sittuation of broadband connectivity in Sri Lanka. I have been grumbling about this , have complained, but no action is taken :(. The site although incomplete at the moment is a neat idea, it would perhaps be a forum that would provide advice, configuration details etc for newbies in the country getting hooked up to broadband Posted on Friday, September 2, 2005 3:47 PM Misc | Back to top

hey guys. before leaving any comments and criticizing, be knowledgeable about the terms and standards and the context. Maybe I am the happiest person who bought and is still using the ADSL 512kbps package. first let me explain a simple fact. 512kbps line actually has (or near) the stipulated speed. what this guy says that his speed is 50kbps is not really true. it's his lack of knowledge. He says it because, I am sure, he saw this when he was downloading some files from the internet. Hey man, it's not 50kbps, it's 50kBps. it's a capitalized "b" not lowercase b. difference is: 'b' means bits and 'B' means bytes, that is 8 bits. 8bits=1byte. got it? now calculate it, and you'll get around 50x8=400kbps. that is 50kBps=400kbps.

we must be thankful to slt for introducing adsl to sri lanka. i am also soooooooooo angry with their pricing. i think that 512kbps package must be priced at 7 US dollars or less. and they must promote the now highest speed (2Mbps)to households at a price around 2 dollars or so. there's no competition to slt at the moment, that's why they had priced it highly. we all must shout against this high pricing. Now stop lamenting about the global standards comparing to the local.

oops... i saw an error made by me in an early post. "... now highest speed (2Mbps)to households at a price around 2 dollars or so." the amount must be corrected as 20 dollars. Anyway, there seems to be a competition now for broadband.
