This error might occur on SharePoint 2013 if you have a list with many lookup columns. The general recommendations are:
1.Do not mess with the resource throttle settings - it may have serious impact on performance
2.Rather create views that limit the number of lookup or workflow columns in a single view

BUT, if you really need to increase the limit anyway, e.g. because you are running a development server and need to access the default view of a large list, I will show you how to do it:

1.Go to central admin
2.Select Application Management\Manage web applications
3.Select the relevant web
4.Select general settings\resource throttling
5.Adjust the List View Lookup Threshold from the default to whatever you need
6.If you screw up and set the SP server on fire because of increased CPU load, say to yourself: I should have listened to the recommendations!

Comments on this post: This view cannot be displayed because the number of lookup and workflow status columns it contains exceeds the threshold (8) enforced by the administrator.
