Course Title:  Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 End-to-End  

Class Overview 
Written and delivered by industry experts, this five-day course provides students with the technical skills required to design, develop and manage solutions using Microsoft Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 (PPS). From a monitoring perspective, students will learn to design, develop and manage interactive dashboards; and from a planning perspective, students will learn to design and develop basic business models for budgeting, to manage budget cycles and to create management reports.

The course consists of lessons, demonstrations and comprehensive "real world" student lab exercises to effectively describe how PPS provides all the functionality needed to deliver an end-to-end performance management solution.

Overview of PPS Architecture
Installing, configuring and securing PPS
Creating a library of effective and reusable PPS
Monitoring elements
Deploying and managing dashboard content
Implementing scorecards, dashboards and reports in SharePoint 2007

Experience using Microsoft Windows operating systems

    M01 - Introduction to Business Performance Management (BPM)
In this module, students are introduced to the concepts of Business Performance Management (BPM) scorecarding methodologies including Kaplan Norton's Balanced Scorecard. Students are shown the final solution that they will build throughout the course.

M02 - Introduction to PerformancePoint Server 2007
PPS is an integral part of the Microsoft Business Intelligence ecosystem. This module introduces the role PPS plays in Microsoft's strategy of "delivering BI to the masses". Students will be given a high-level overview of PPS overall (including a brief introduction to Planning). Students learn about PPS' flexible architecture, integration with SharePoint and the ability to create a library of rich, reusable objects that present data from a variety of sources.

M03 - The Element Hierarchy and Dashboard Designer
In this module, students begin by exploring the functionality and usage of Dashboard Designer; how it is used to build Monitoring solutions and manage the Monitoring Server. Students will also gain an understanding of the hierarchical nature and common meta data properties of Monitoring elements and how their inter-dependant relationships contribute to a complete solution.

M04 - Developing elements
In this module students receive detailed instruction on each of the six major elements that make up a Monitoring solution: Indicators, Data Sources, KPIs, Scorecards, Reports and Dashboards. Practical experience is gained by creating, previewing and publishing examples of each of the six elements.

M05 - Exporting Content and working with SharePoint
Once created, Dashboards can be exported directly to SharePoint. Using the theory presented in this module, students will export Dashboards to SharePoint and export Scorecard content to Reporting Services. Students will gain practical experience in working with Monitoring web parts and SharePoint to manage and expose element and their data to end users in a variety of ways.

M06 - Element Management
Understanding the ways in which element definitions can be managed is an important aspect of Monitoring in an enterprise installation. Using Dashboard Designer students will generate an understanding of the ways in which element definition history and interdependency can be effectively managed.

M07 - Securing Monitoring Content
Data security can be controlled from a number of different areas in an IT environment. PPS provides role-based security capabilities on the objects managed in the Monitoring Server. In this module, students learn about Monitoring security. In addition, they learn how security is implemented in SharePoint and how the sources of data contribute to the overall security of a PPS solution.

M08 - Advanced Monitoring Topics
There are many ways in which Monitoring components can provide more advanced functionality. Students will gain a greater understanding of the process involved in KPI scoring and the content of the meta data database. This module will also cover the additional value of advanced MDX functionality along with PPS Monitoring's ability to integrate with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) components and ProClarity analytics.

P02 - Introduction to PerformancePoint Server 2007 Planning
PPS Planning is central to driver-based budgeting in a Microsoft Business Performance Management implementation. Students are given a high-level overview of PPS overall (including a brief introduction to Monitoring). They are also introduced to the PPS Planning application architecture, as well as its components: Planning Administration Console, Planning Business Modeler and the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel 2007.

P03 - Working with Planning Administration Console
In this module students begin by working with the Planning Administration Console, and learn how it is used to configure Applications and Sites. Students are introduced to the concept of a business type library, which is a collection of metadata used to build subsequent models. Students will also learn how to specify Application and Staging Databases, create a User Master List as well as define specific Server Roles.

P04 - Working with Planning Business Modeler
In this module students continue to explore the functionality and use of Planning Business Modeler. Students learn more about the elements which are included in a business type library (dimensions, member sets and views, models, forms and reports). Finally, students will learn how to define and secure a model, integrate data as well as define business rules for performing calculations, allocating assumption data as well as publishing data to external destinations.

P05 - Working with the PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel 2007
In this module students are introduced to the features and functions of PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel 2007. They will learn how to connect to a Planning Server, create a matrix data-entry form for a given model and publish the form to the Planning Server.

P06 - Implementing Process Management
Once the model has been designed and a data entry form configured and published, the next step is to implement a budget cycle of assignments. Students will learn how to use Planning Business Modeler to configure assignments and automate approval workflows for specific forms. Students will also learn about jobs which can be configured to execute certain types of business rules which aid in consolidation.

P07 - Management Reporting
In this module, students return to Excel 2007 to learn how to use the PerformancePoint Add-in to create Management Reports which can be deployed to SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. Students are also introduced to PerformancePoint Professional Management Reporter as an alternate means to create interactive Management Reports driven by PerformancePoint Planning models.

P08 - Advanced Topics
In this final module, students revisit the purpose of driver-based budgeting and learn about the different approaches to take in applying stretch-targets into an existing PerformancePoint Monitoring dashboard, including: using outbound Business Rule Sets, direct integration through a dashboard data source, and indirect integration via an underlying data warehouse. The module and course concludes with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages to each approach.
