Brian Scarbeau Insights from a seasoned Computer Science Trainer

If you're a member of the Computer Science Teachers Association and you voted me as a Board Member I want to take this opportunity to thank you.

The Computer Science Teachers Association is a national board that supports and promotes the teaching of computer science and other computing disciplines. CSTA provides opportunities for K-12 teachers and students to better understand the computing disciplines and to more successfully prepare themselves to teach and learn.

The purpose of the organization is as follows:

  • Build a strong community of computer science educators who share their knowledge.
  • Provide teachers with opportunities for high quality professional development.
  • Advocate at all levels for a comprehensive computer science curricula.
  • Support projects that communicate the excitement of computer science to students and improve their understanding of the opportunities it provides.
  • Collect and disseminating research about computer science education.
  • Provide policy recommendations to support computer science in the high school curriculum.
  • Raise awareness that computer science educators are highly qualified professionals with skills that enrich the educational experience of their students.

Chris Stephenson is the the Executive Director and a tireless advocate for Computer Science Education. She has been in charge of the annual  Computer Science and Information Technology Symposium.  This high profile event, hosted by CSTA and ISTE, is a professional development opportunity for computer science, information technology, and computing applications teachers who need practical, relevant information to help them prepare their students for the future.

I have had the opportunity to speak and conduct workshops at several of these symposiums and if you are a high school computer science teacher you need to consider going to this event held in Atlanta, GA this year.

I look forward to serving on the board and I encourage CS teachers to join this organization. The price of membership isn't bad either... it's FREE! Hope to see you at the Symposium.
