LET THE BOY GO TO DEV TEACH!

Thursday, March 13, 2008 4:27 PM

I remember a few years ago when I was just starting to really get involved in the technology community I had the opportunity to attend Tech Ed 2005 through INETA and a contest they were holding at the time. That experience forever changed my life...which sounds overdramatic, but is entirely true. It's because of Tech Ed that I met guys like Chris, Matt, Brendon, Caleb, Amanda, Shane, and many others...and also got to learn alot about technology as well.

Recently, we had a code camp and gave away a free pass to Dev Teach Toronto. Dev Teach is a fantastic conference with great content and speakers, and is Canadian (although the speaker list is definately international). Unfortunately, the guy who won this free pass is a university student and figures that he won't be able to swing the airfare and hotel costs, so will probably just give away the pass.

I don't want to see this happen. I think that we need to encourage and support those that are being schooled to join our industry and community, and we have to start creating the mindset of community by supporting opportunities like this one.

I'm asking you my blogging readership to consider whether you or your company would be interested in helping send this young man to the conference. The costs are listed below, itemized by what needs to be covered. If you're interested in helping out, please email me through my blog and let me know.

Flight (Winnipeg to Toronto)  $300.00  (I'll cover this one...just need coverage for the rest)

Flight (Toronto to Winnipeg)  $300.00

Hotel Monday  $150.00

Hotel Tuesday $150.00

Hotel Wednesday $150.00

Hotel Thursday $150.00

[Edit: The original 250/night for hotel was based on a special rate at the hotel Dev Teach was staying at...obviously as others have commented, there are other hotels with cheaper rates within walking distance. Which means the overall cost is EVEN LESS!]

Thanks,

D

*Note: The title is a reference to the Herlihy Boy skit from SNL, starring Chris Farly and Adam Sandler...the one where the boy is like "Please...let me mow your yard" and the dad is all "Let the boy mow your yard...for the love of God!" I'd put a picture up or link you to a YouTube version of it, but NBC would rather you just buy the DVD.

FYI - there are a lot of decent hotels in the downtown core that you can get for $150 per night or less. That'll shave $400 off the total needed.

Off the top of my head I can suggest:

Holiday Inn Express
Comfort Suites
Hotel Victoria 3/13/2008 4:52 PM | Rob Windsor

A thousand bucks (even Canadian) for 4 nights of hotel stay is pretty damn expensive. Maybe someone who is going could offer to share a room.

I've certainly done it before, it beats not going.

Valid points about the hotel...I've adjusted the amount accordingly *AND* that's a great idea about just sharing a room Chris! (I'd share mine, but as Roy Drenker would tell you, the lad would get *no* sleep and have to invest in high quality ear plugs to keep my snoring out)

What's up with Canadians these days? Can a brotha get a "Donate Here" link? You need a PayPal tip jar and a running total. But I'll quit complaining - I'm sending you an email now, I'll do what I can. 3/14/2008 9:05 AM | Bill

D'Arcy - I'm including this in the next issue of the Community-Credit newsletter which goes out later today. Hopefully that'll get some other folks who can help out too! :)
