Dang, I really really wanted to run Windows Vista on my new Lenovo (formally IBM) Thinkpad T60. I installed it just fine and got all the drivers working, but I need three things in order for this to be my work laptop. One, I need Microsoft Outlook and that worked just fine. I need our work-based messaging program to work. It didn't at first, but you can run this program using the Program Compatibility Wizard and assign it to run in a Windows XP SP2 context. Then the last program I need is Nortel's Contivity VPN Client. At first I couldn't even install it, but using the Program Compatibility Wizard I was able to run the Install.bat files as Windows XP SP2 and it installed just fine. My problem though is that when I try to connect using this program I get a 'Failed to Open Socket' error and a 'Create Socket Failed with 10047' (which is a Nortel error). It seems that there is a new Address Space Layout Randomization capability that is stopping the socket from being opened and I can't get around it. Any ideas would be great! I have to install Windows XP SP2 today. How sad, I was really looking forward to working with Windows Vista. I guess I will have to wait till next year.

I am in the same boat as you - we run that VPN client here as well. From what I understand, no one's VPN client (even Microsoft's) works in Vista yet. I heard a rumor that Nortel would have a beta of a working client at the end of June - but it is just a rumor ...

What version of the Nortel VPN Client are you using? I am working with my account executive at Nortel trying to locate a version of the client that will function properly with MS Vista.

Likewise, Same error as th eoriginal post. I also use Contivity wit XP but get the same error 'Failed to Open Socket' error and a 'Create Socket Failed with 10047'. If I find a beta or third party fix I will definitely give a post.

When I installed Nortel Client on my vista, there came a "VPN Connection" in the "Connect to a network" panel. I clicked on it to start the connection. After filling in the credentials, I'm connected. It seems the "Contivity VPN Client" icon is useless.

zhibin: My guess is that u use PPTP for your VPN conn. that should work, IPSEC on the other hand won't work. Especially not if u use GroupID.
Andy: I get the same problem with my broadcom netextreme NIC, but it works just fine Intel wifi NIC.

Same here. Installs fine, I can connect succesfully using certificate authentication, but default gateway remains at 0.0.0.0 and no network traffic seems to get through.

Anyone get this configured properly?

I installed the 6.07 from that link http://993399.com/resources/nortel_contivity_vpn_client_for_vista and it worked before. but suddenly 2 weeks ago it is saying that it is about to expire. It expired and when I tried to reinstall it, it still saying it is expired. I searched the Internet and found somewhere the version 6.07. The difference is that, the one that expires is over 4.6mb, the one that I found and was able to install without seeing the expire message is only about 2.6mb. Now, when I ran it, I still get the Eacfilt must be enabled...message.

I called Nortel to ask for help but they are bunch of jerks. No wonder that company is losing money. They will not try to help me at all even though it is just the client software that I need. I want to get it directly from nortel so I can compare. But Nortel is just arrogant as if they are the leading vendor. I would advise anyone not to buy anything that is Nortel

Thanks RE. I am going to try it now. One thing about the 6.07d. I have seen lots of links wherein they have the pre-release of 6.07d and they say to set the installation to XP compatibility mode. it will not let you as that installation file is meant for Vista and it will have a popup saying this is meant for Vista and therefore you cannot set the XP comp mode.

I have installed the NORTEL VPN Contivity on my computer with Vista System.
I have upgraded it with the eac607d.exe (without setting the XP compatibility because this doesn't work).
After the complete installation and restart, i have a strange behavior of my VPN client:
-if i connect to the internet through Wifi connection or with ADSL connection that doesn't require username and password, the VPN client works fine and connect to the server
-if i connect with ADSL connection that requires username and password, or through RTC connection, then the VPN client cannot connect and i have a message saying that i should "allow the firewall UDP connection through port 15500", even if i turn off the firewall.
I think that there is a setting to modify in the networks management through Vista but i have not found what.
Does anyone have an idea to solve this problem? I often need to connect through RTC connection.

I have some success. I use 6.07d on Vista with no problem to a contivity with no group authentication that uses UDP4500.

For another VPN that uses Group auth and UDP10000 I can connect fine if I am connected via WiFi or ethernet, but if I dial up via 3G data card then I get a failure to connect, and a warning that firewalls should allow UDP 10,000. This is the same laptop with no firewall.

Another post elswehere stated there is a problem with Vista and VPN connections over dial-up networking due to no default gateway being set on dial-up connections.

I have a workaround, but it's a bit over the top.

Install VMWare Player and create a Windows XP guest.
Connect to the internet via 3G in Vista
Open the VMWare guest XP and connect with the VPN client from that.
Works fine.

Damn Vista!

Thanks for your post Minky, i am very interested as i am in the same situation, i often need to connect through dial-up connection.
You talk about no default gateway through this kind of connections, isn't there a way to solve this point. I am not used with virtual machine and i would prefer to find a simple way for me to connect VPN through dial-up connections.
If anyone knows a way to solve this, it would be great.

Hi all

I installed Nortel VPN client V06_07.026 on Windows Vista Premium Edition.I was able to install it successfully, but when I try to connect it using username/password and group authentication, I get the following error message "Unable to contact the server". And it asks me to configure outbound traffic on UDP port 4240,even though I do not have a firewall enabled. It doesn't connect!! But everything works fine on Windows XP SP2.
Any help would be appreciated!!

I have posted just before you the same kind of question.
Actually, i have found on the Nortel website some files that anyone can download now, including the VPN 06-07.026, and a document of explanations that refers to this kind of problem. There is still no solution to solve this. Here is the link:

Regarding the UDP error, it is on the server side. If the VPN box is behind a firewall, open the UDP port to be able to access that device from the WAN side.
