When I sent to install a clean image of Windows XP on my new Thinkpad T60, it wouldn't proceed as it couldn't find any hard drive to deploy the OS to. To get around this, you have to step into the BIOS by pressing the ThinkVantage blue button at the top of the keyboard. Once there, go into the CONFIG section and scroll down to SATA. From here, change the setting to Compatibility and then ESC out and end by saving the changes made. Reboot and you will then be able to install the OS.

This is what I've been looking for. The default installation came with to much crap slowing down the system so I'm turning to a clean install. Had to go in to the BIOS and change the SATA config as stated. After doing this I had no problem continuing with the format/installation.

Also tried to install the latest Ubuntu 6.06 but with little luck although I'm sure it would have worked if I'd given it some more time.

It's always hard when you buy a state of the art laptop, usually you end up with a lot of child deaseses.

My next mission will be to do a BIOS upgrade to fix the fan problem when the laptop is running on battery.

So, how about the AHCI benefits, with setting up the image in compatibility mode do you still get the benefits of the SATA drive? I have been researching this and it seems to me if I set up an image in compatibility mode I will not get the benefits of AHCI witch is suppose to be much better or at least the new standard.

Wow, I just noticed I spelled which incorrectly. I really need to proof read these more closely.

I'm asking the same question as Dave. Does your Vista crash if you now reverse your BIOS changes?

Don't know about Vista, but yes... XP will 'blue screen' if you switch it back. I am hoping that this is just a driver issue, but have yet to find a solution. If anyone gets the specifics, please share!

I don't know if you tried this, but according to IBM's support site, http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-62909, you just need to install the driver, after installing Windows, and you can then set it back to AHCI mode.

Thanks for this advice. I've been trying relentlessly all night to get rid of Vista from a new laptop. Tried both Server 2003 and SUSU 10.1

On my way to a real OS now. Thanks again.

Wow, that is great ! Thank you very much !! Me and my friend spent a couple of hours on the phone trying to figure it out, your workaround is glory and magic ! (especially helpful when the laptop is on the other end of the phone line =)

Thanks a lot! Just imaged my drive from a T40 to the T60 and thought I had to reinstall when I got the 7B stop. Changing the BIOS setting made the image bootable. Great! :)

I have been facing the same problem,I tried updating my xp since I could not repair the existing xp since it would show no hard disk found, but when I change from compatibility mode to AHCi I get a blue screen when I start, so I need to go back and change,I see a service partition which is around 6.8GB,I tried accessing it thru disk management but wasn't successful, could someone tell me what is this all about and is it necessary, please advice to deprive yourself from such huge storage space

Hi,

It would seem the BIOS is bypassed on my machine as I used to have to hit escape on a screen which said 'number of password attempts exceeded' or words to that effect when booting up. My comp had previously lost power during a system restore and now wont recognise the HDD. Is it unfixable as I cant access bios?

Thanks for this advice, it really helped. Any ideas though as to how to get the sound working on a T60. All drivers etc up to date and yet I still can't get it working.

Thanks again
