An Archived Managed World This blog has moved to

I'm really hoping that some of you that may read this will “weigh in” on this question I have.

Is it necessary to learn to play the “political game” in order to be a successful developer? By successful, I am meaning “to continue to climb the employment ladder at a company”.

I have no opinions on the subject yet but am starting to think that it may be an “improvement needed” in order to continue to grow at a company. I don't know though. Thoughts?

Hate to say this - but you pretty much have to play some 'game' to advance in the corporate world. I hope someone says that is not true then I'll be brushing up on my C# - starting immediately! :) But seriously, if your company offers any training/professional development possibilities - take advantage.

Unless you work for a VERY large company (or a very cool one), the actual development part of your career won't go very high on the corporate ladder and you will quickly become middle management. Regardless of that, you will either have to be damn good at your craft or you'll need to be able to play politics a bit. If you're good enough, you can be a diva, otherwise, it takes a little more.

Play, play, PLAY! That's my favorite game. Maybe that's just because I'm good at it ;-) The only problem with playing politics is when your upper management buddies leave - if the people moving up have vastly different ideals, it might be hard to get in good with them. I could go on for hours, but I'll save all that for a blog some boring afternoon.

Unfortunately, I am not very good at all at playing politics although my general communication skills have been getting a lot better. Are there any good resources out there or advice anyone could give on how to play the game well?

all you have to do is warp the Golden Rule a little:

"do unto others as they would have you do unto them."

give'em what they want and they'll love you.
