It looks like good times lie ahead for game developers of both the Windows and XBox platform. Today Microsoft showed their intentions for game developers when they announced the planning of XNA, the foundation of Microsoft's future game development platform. Understand that this will not be replacing DirectX, it will be built on top of DirectX. I, for one, cannot wait to hear more about this platform. If anyone works for Microsoft or knows anyone who works for Microsoft, how 'bout giving Jasey-Wasey a little “hook up” action, eh? Eh? ::wink, wink:: No? oh well, I guess I will have to wait until everyone else finds out what is going on.

What interests me is how this XNA platform will tie in with Longhorn. If it does indeed target both Windows and XBox platforms, making cross-platform development much easier, it just seems like it would have to be a “lowest common denominator” platform. If that were the case, then it would seem that it would be a little more difficult to leverage the advantages that Longhorn will give us. I haven't seen any announcments on when XNA is gearing up to be released. Perhaps it won't be released until Longhorn? That seems too far away though. Then again, Microsoft might just come out and prove me considerably off-base. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that I wasn't able to figure out what Microsoft's true intentions are.

I will answer it in this way. Do you consider Direct X to be a Lowest common denominator API??

The tools will be designed (from my current understanding) to allow access to the full power of the machine it is on. and can scale down to a lower common denominator if teh developer feels that is a good thing or not.

Since XNA will start out on the current Xbox and XP. and evolve to the LH/xbox2/mobil pc in lh generation I hope that this will scale accordenly:)

alot of what it will do is allow for common controls between the console and the PC. interaction between PC and Xbox games on Live etc etc. but there will be more. Tools will get a common interface to plug into the design loop.

Sweet. Thanks Douglas. I didn't know XNA was starting on the current XBox and XP. It makes a lot of sense. One thing is for sure, both game developers and consumers are most likely going to be better off because of this.
