a thump to the brain
Saw this tonight - thought it was pretty interesting reading. Now to go apply it and see what happens.
Since I'm such a big fan of Pocket PC's in general I spend a lot of time goofing around with them. One thing I naturally like to do is play games on them. Sean O'Connor (across the ocean in England) develops some pretty neat games for the Pocket PC and you can get trial versions of them from his web site: http://www.windowsgames.co.... The two games I've been playing in spare moments while waiting in line, etc. recently have been Pocket Slay and Pocket Conquest. Those of you who've attended ......

Eric Sink on the Business of Software By Eric Sink Published by Apress 2006 ISBN: 1-59059-623-4 It’s been said that writing software well is a complex task and running a business well is equally complex (at least in my eyes). For someone to span both realms and speak about them with authority and experience is a pretty sweet deal…and Eric Sink does just that. Two things I’ve enjoyed since my younger days were programming and the idea of running a business. In my youthful days mixing the two were ......
Charleston is gearing up for another MSDN Event with the latest tour coming to the Charles Towne Square Stadium 18 on November 30th. If you're in the Charleston area, sign up here, and after you do that, if you aren't already involved, go check out the Greater Charleston .NET User Group. I was pretty excited to hear from Glen a while back that he was coming back to town after he'd been here earlier this year in May and am looking forward to some more awesome presentations covering Visual Studio for ......
Acer Aspire 9800 Pros: Awesome display (vibrancy, color, etc.) Dual Hard Drives Gigabit Ethernet Cons: Perceived performance issues Size, weight Keyboard Short Attention Span Review - "A nice looking box with some cool features but I'm not quite sold yet." Review: OK so I work in a capacity where as I change projects I usually get to give up my current PC/Laptop and get a fresh new one, which is specific for that project. I’ve gone through this for a few years now and usually I’m pretty stoked…after ......
Software Engineering with Microsoft Visual Studio Team System By Sam Guckenheimer with Juan J. Perez Published by Addison-Wesley 2006 ISBN: 0-321-27872-0 This book stands out among Visual Studio Team System books because it’s not so much a “cook book” or “how to use” manual for VSTS as much as it is a book about how to engineer software using VSTS. That may sound confusing at first, but let’s read on. When a friend first referred me to this book, he gave me the same disclaimer – “Lou, this isn’t ......
Professional Software Development By Stephen McConnell Published by Addison-Wesley 2004 ISBN: 0-321-19367-9 The best “short attention span” summary I can think of is actually a quote from the back cover of the book: “If you are a programmer, software developer, engineer, or work in software development, you should READ THIS BOOK” (caps are in the original quote!) This book is a very easy and enjoyable read. McConnell’s writing style flows very smoothly and he engages you with relevant anecdotes based ......
I recently finished Steve Wozniak's iWoz and it was a real treat to get into the mind of the guy who basically built the device responsible for so many hours spent doing things other than homework as a kid. I still remember the day my dad came home when I was a kid and brought me a big ol' box and said it was a computer. I said “What's that” and he said “Well, open it and find out”. So my journey began. Of course he already knew what it was and what it could do and had been ......
GC.NUG will be hosting Greg Young this month as our featured speaker. Some of you know who he is from the Code Camp last month. This month Greg will be speaking about Advanced Debugging. "Advanced Developers never create bugs in their code, but they are frequently called upon to find and squash the bugs that mysteriously work their way into code due to "environmental issues". We start with how to set up an enterprise environment to enable us to be more efficient in combating problems and then we ......
Pro .NET 2.0 Extreme Programming By Greg Pearman and James Goodwill Published by Apress 2006 ISBN: 1-59059-480-0 I know there’s mixed feelings out there about Extreme Programming, especially in the defense industry where I work and everything seems to be the exact opposite of XP, but here’s a book worth looking at if you’re at all curious about the subject. I was especially pleased to find that Part I was so short since based on the title alone I had expectations the book would ......
I remember a couple months back I got an e-mail from Chris telling me about the Community-Credit web site. So the concept seemed pretty cool (Stupid prizes for smart people) and I signed up. Well a little while later Chris won the Grand Prize (July 2006 contest) and was pretty excited so I started thinking about keeping track of things more. September was a busy month for me with the Greater Charleston .NET User group meeting (I’m the VP), Code Camp 2.0 (2.5 sessions presented), a Microsoft ......
So we got in two new Dell Precision 690s at the shop yesterday and our first task was to install Windows 2003 Server on it (it comes with Windows XP Pro). After trying all the normal stuff (I used to think I knew a thing or two about computers) nothing was working because the Windows 2003 Server disk couldn’t identify the SAS drive installed and according to Dell Tech Support, they didn’t have a driver available for Windows 2003 that I could use with that controller. Incidentally the ......
