Product Review – Crutch Remedy® Cushions and Hand Grips
For those who hadn’t heard yet, I’ve been on crutches the past 3 weeks or so after a knee injury (torn ACL). Walking on the crutches was OK but after a few days started to get pretty painful in my hands and under my arms. The problem was the padding on a standard crutch was not very thick and with my weight pushing on those pads, I could easily feel the hard metal underneath. Naturally I turned to the web to find a solution. Surely someone else must have experienced this and had a recommendation ......

The last few months have been pretty crazy. Just before the MVP summit in February I was approached about changing to a different project with my (then current) employer, and right after the summit I was approached by another company. Eventually I went with the new company and a new role in the Information Assurance field. More to come on that as things progress. All that being said I've not been as active in the .NET community as I once was and I miss it - so I'm looking to dive back in especially ......

Get Fit in February Challenge
Today begins the Get Fit in February Challenge from Facebook. If you haven't already signed up - check it out while the month is still young and compete against over 100 other geeks for an MSDN subscription and other prizes! :) Here's my first blog entry concerning the challenge. I'm starting the challenge at 210 lbs...yeah I ended up putting on some of what I lost last year after giving up soda completely. I was down to 195 for a while but I guess the holidays and then not really paying attention ......

An old friend awarded Bronze Star with Valor

Carmack and I served in the same squadron overseas years ago. He got orders to another base about the same time I decided to leave the military. Imagine my surprise when I saw this:

Small reflection on changes over the years...
So of course the big announcement for every .NET Geek this week is Windows 7 availability. As I type this out, I'm downloading it in the background (released already on MSDN) and I hear tomorrow Microsoft will open up downloads to like 3 million people. I heard a tweet or two from folks about how large it is and how long it's taking to download and it got me thinking back to when Sun first released the Java SDK and I downloaded that thing. I don't remember how big it was, but it might as well have ......

The duck...go duck, go!
I pulled into my driveway after work yesterday and my son immediately starts asking if we could go feed the ducks near one of the ponds in the neighborhood. I had told him yesterday that we could do it and so we grabbed some bread and his wagon and walked down there. My wife and daughter followed (at first, then raced ahead of us) on their bikes. The pond we picked was along one of two main roads in our neighborhood. Even though the speed limit is 25 and there's a pool and playground near the pond ......

AT&T Customer Service is horrible
<rant> AT&T Customer Service sucks. AT&T Customer Service is horrible. AT&T Customer Service is nearly the worst I've ever experienced. If you have AT&T consider dropping them before you run into the unfortunate event of having to deal with their horrible customer service. If you're shopping for a cell phone provider, wireless provider, etc., don't consider AT&T because it's just not worth it. I'll explain more later. Right now just trust me on this. That is all. </rant> ......

Follow up: This geek is asking for help
Little did I realize when I posted a blog entry asking for help on August 12th asking for help that the response would be so awesome! There were so many folks both local and quite far away who one way or another found that entry and helped in some way shape or form whether it was a donation of cash, school supplies, or clothing, thank you so much for everything everyone donated. One of the huge hurdles we faced with the kids is over for now. Getting them geared up for school with clothes, shoes, ......

You all rock! Thanks so much!
The response to my plea for assistance yesterday has been pretty overwhelming so far...with inquiries and donations coming in from around the U.S. and even other countries, so thank you, all of you. I had a number of inquiries about other ways people might help and I'll address them here so as to not have a ton of e-mails, phone calls, etc. to make :) Q1) What ages are the kids and what clothing sizes are they? A1) My nieces and nephews that we took in are a 16 year old girl, a 14 year old girl, ......

Happy 0x22 b-day to me :)
I started celebrating my birthday in hex when I turned 0x19 because I thought it would be fun to be "19" again - of course that kinda lost its luster the next year when I became 0x1A - just doesn't have the same ring to it, eh? Fast forward to 2 years ago whe I finally got to turn "20" again and now it's got a nice ring again...heh heh. My daughter picked out a new mountain bike for me to ride - her subtle way of getting me to actually ride a bike with her rather than what I usually do which is ride ......

A trip down memory lane...

I saw this on and just had to buy it:

In almost every office I visit I see these goofy posters on the wall and I’ve always cringed when I saw them so this one was fitting – it’s going up on the wall in my office with a mini-version going up on the cubicle wall @ work :)

This geek is asking for help...
As some of you may already know this has been a roller-coaster year for me starting with the hospitalization and near death of my son in February. Between the subsequent hospitalizations, (July marked the first calendar month he didn't get admitted to the hospital at all!), a pretty bad car wreck that left me with a concussion and associated post-concussion problems, and then additional extended family issues (one sister-in-law nearly died of a mix-up with prescriptions she was given at the ER, another ......

Dropping off the radar for a while...
As some of you may know having seen me @ Code Camps, or other events in the past 6 months or so know, my life's been pretty hectic. Starting back in February and continuing up to this very night, my son has been in and out of the hospital so many times it's sickening to think that I know so much about the inner workings of a place nobody should have to visit that often. He was last discharged Tuesday, and then at 3:30 this morning (Monday) he was re-admitted. Each time they get a little closer to ......

Birthday Paradox (Happy 0x23 B-day to me!)
I'm doing a little experiment. Today's my birthday and I'm wondering with regards to the Birthday Paradox how many people out there reading this share the same birthday. If you do - comment on this entry. Thanks! :)

Thanks for the feedback/comments!
I've noticed an increasing number of comments from folks who come across my blog after searching for something...mostly goofy little things like the errors I've come across, or other technical issues I've run into and people who ran into the same thing that were able to solve their problem after reading my blog. Thanks to all those who took the time to thank me in their comments or via e-mail. It's nice to know I'm saving some other people time and effort with my postings. :) And to those searching ......

In flight Emergency (ok - so two IFE's)
An odd thing happened during both the flight to Seattle and the flight back from Seattle last week…each flight had a medical in-flight emergency (IFE). The reason I say it’s odd is because I’ve been flying for more than 30 years (yeah so I just aged myself) and in all those years I only remember 1 other time we had an IFE during a transatlantic flight from Aviano, Italy to JFK in New York – we had to make an emergency stop in Reykjavík, Iceland (which incidentally is a twin city to Seattle) due to ......

The Freeze Warning

So as I start up my car this morning and roll down my driveway I realize there's a new light lit on my dash - the freeze warning light! I do a double check of the temperature reading and it's 36 degrees (F). First time I've seen that in a long time down here in South Carolina!

Move Slowly – as long as there are no weapons or severed heads in the car we’re OK.
In an earlier post I mentioned a relatively uneventful 6+ hour drive from Charleston, SC to Richmond, VA for the Richmond Code Camp this past weekend. Having left my house in the wee hours of the morning and encountering very little traffic along most of my route I was pretty ready to just get to the event and get out of my car as I was pulling in toward Richmond. It was daylight and there was more morning traffic on the road. Having travelled up most of I-95 at a steady 70-75 MPH (the posted speed ......

And I still don't have an autographed copy of Windows Vista!
Well with all this hoopla surrounding Microsoft Silverlight, and the question of the product’s name origin, I finally decided to get down to the bottom of it…and it was perfect timing that my Community-Credit prize package from January and February arrived today. Earlier this evening I managed to get in touch with David to ask him first hand about it and was quite surprised at the answer. With all that said, Congratulations David! It’s a great feeling to have your last name attached to a major product ......
