If you want to run a 64 bit virtual machine on a 32 bit host you have two options

1. VMWare Server (or a Workstation version that supports 64bit guests)

2. Sun Virtual box

Though 64 bit guests on 32 bit hosts is possible, it requires that you are running x64 (not ia64) hardware. All the new Intel processors are 64 bit compatible (if you have T5200/T550 on your laptop, you are out of luck) VMWare has a free tool you can download to check whether your machine can run 64bit guests.

Microsoft Vitual PC and Microsoft Windows Virtual PC do not support 64 bit guests. Also Hyper-V will run only on a 64 bit host. So if you are looking for a Microsoft solution, then tough luck!

I love Sun virtual box. It’s completely free to use at home for personal use. You have to buy license if you are going to use in production environment.
