The Life and Times of a Dev Yes, we're really that weird

Last time I wrote about global warming being a hoax I received several very, um, shall we say "nice", responses telling me I was all alone in my belief and the people I used as a sources were stupid.  In a report to the Senate of the US released on the 20th of December, they show that over 400 scientists from around the world are also skeptical about global warming.  So much for the claim that all credible scientists think global warming is true.  But hey, what do I know, go read the report, which is full of quotes from people with PhD's in climate related fields that actually know what they're talking about.

I'll stand by my position that Global Warming is a scam intended to punish capitalism and bring down successful nations that have embraced capitalism.

Let the flaming begin--it's cold today anyway. :)

Global warming, or as they call it now Global Climate Change, is a religion. I think the purpose of this movement is to grab power and money. One big result of this movement is the carbon tax.

The skeptic community has examined the evidenced and determined it's overwhelming. The only people left denying global warming exists and has man-made causes are conspiracy theorists and radical capitalists. You proved you were in both those camps when you wrote "Global Warming is a scam intended to punish capitalism and bring down successful nations that have embraced capitalism."

400 scientists versus the rest of the scientific community? That's not convincing. Even the creationists can muster more support than that.

The ice at the polar cap is melting...man made or not, we should probably look into that?

I will bite.

First off, I suggest that you look at the wiki on the subject which brings up both points of view.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_warming

Global warming is real. One question that many focus on is whether mankind is responsible or other factors are responsible. I take it you don't think mankind is responsible.

My position is - who cares? When you consider that if this planet becomes uninhabitable because food production is hampered by global warming, we're SOL. We don't have a fallback planet to work with here. So we need to look closely at what's going on because the consequences of doing nothing may be our extinction.

You have achieved supreme phlogiston denial, along with the creationist community.

The only people that haven't abandoned climate denialism are the energy and tobacco funders.

You all just proved my point....this is more of a religious experiment than reality...in the 1970's, the environmentalists were saying that the earth was headed toward global cooling...now they say it is headed for extreme global warming...

Were the same "scientists" right then or now?

Governments, charities, and individuals donate billions of dollars toward this and other environmental causes...If all of the environmental scientist that have devoted their lives to studying global warming were to suddenly say that global warming does not exist, then where would their next paycheck come from?

Your reactions seems to come from an emotional response instead of informed thought...

One Newsweek article does not a scientific consensus make. Which you would know IF you knew the first thing about climate science.

Which you don't. Nor is this at all religion. We just know things, and you just DON'T know things. We understand science, and you bark about it like a well-trained attack dog.

Our reactions come from knowing about things like Milankovic cycles and solar cycles and particulates, and isotopes of carbon, and dipole moments of molecules, and forcings and feedbacks. YOU understand exactly none of it.

Stupid people like you are easy to fool, especially because you mistake arrogant belligerence like yours for knowledge.

This is a perfect example. There were not even a plurality of scientists in the 1970s saying that, in essence, global dimming would overtake global warming (let alone a majority). The majority were saying what the denialist community are now saying, 30 years out of date - that it was too early to tell, that natural forcings might be the only significant things to consider, etc. Indeed, even then a sizable minority of climate scientists believed that, once the noise of natural cycles was accounted for, global warming would eventually come out from human activity (believed since the 19th c. in fact) - because some greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane linger in the atmosphere so much longer than any particulates do.

It is apparent that this discussion can no longer go forward...the environmnetal tripe that you espouse has deteriorated into maniacal ramblings of the politics of personal destruction...

I do not hold that against you because you do not know what you are saying...

Joshua, please read up on everything and make an informed decision. The wiki article Jonathan pointed out is a good place to start. Drop the rhetoric, look at the data.

Chris, no decision is required, whether informed or otherwise. To think that what an individual does can affect global climate change, whether it be real or imaginary, is intellectually bankrupt. You might say, by being "informed", one can make a better decision on what presidential candidate supports measures to fight global warming.

There are two problems with that approach.

The first problem is what sources can truly be believed? What government or international organization can be believed? The fundamental idea that "truth" is absolute coming from an individual, government, organization, or consensus of any of these, stands reason on its head. "Truth" has always been subjective; in this case, truth is influenced by the paradigms and beliefs of the adherents of this movement. Others that might reject the hypothesis and conclusions of global warming are called "deniers"...this is an effective tactic which groups these people with other people that have denied the holocaust and other hideous atrocities of the twentieth century, thus disparaging the opposition's argument. If one is to adequately refute opposing ideas, it must be done on logic and not on personal attacks.

If one is convinced that this global warming issue is indeed very serious, what polotician do you choose? Obviously, you would want to choose a candidate that truly believes in the movement and wants to deal with it effectively. Some wants to completely control industries by using the carbon tax, and who knows what other taxes, as if this and other countries' citizens and industries are not taxed enough. Others want to take a more reasonable approach by advocating being proper stewards of the wonderful earth that we have been given.

An important point to consider is what will governments do with the proceeds of the carbon tax? Why is it, the high priest of this religion, Al Gore, can fly around in jets adding even more pollutants into the atmosphere. By understanding the answer to these questions, you start to understand where global warming and other socialistic schemes originate.

No, by being "informed," I mean researching the relevant information out there. It appears that you have already made your decision without doing the proper research.

"If one is to adequately refute opposing ideas, it must be done on logic and not on personal attacks."

Please don't appeal to logic while at the same time utilizing logical fallacies. There are many in your response to me.

I will agree that the climate is changing, whatever the cause there is no dening it! I personaly see that the Global Warming movement has more to due with politics and money than actual concern for the planet.

After all political figures will jump on any band wagon for votes or the prospect of gaining power, and wealth from popular ideas of people who genuinly care for the well being of nature. If government's actually cared something major would have been done and the issue taken more seriously, but for the most part it's the same old sad story, say a bunch of fancy words and do nothing, or do the exact opposite. Frankly we have been serving the same warlords and profiteers for thousands of years, whoes only goal has been and will continue to be the gathering of wealth and power no matter the cost to nature and people. We've been swindled, and mother nature is pissed off, trust me she will fix the problem with or without us.

The planet has been here for a few billion years and will take care of herself. In the words of George Carlin, "The planet is fine! It's the people who are fucked!", the only thing we can really do is try to help the old girl out and try to get back on her good side before she "shakes us off like a bad case of flees." Time for us all to practice what we preach and work for that bright future that most of us want free of the repeating mistakes and errors of the past. We are all in the same boat and we will either sail together or sink together, the choice is ours to make. So lets make it happen. Take back your power from the cheats and the swindles and use it for the betterment of our planet and all humanity. We can all make a difference. We just have to swallow our pride ,work together, and keep the profiteers and warlords from taking advantage of us and nature.
