Saqib Ullah BootStrapper Know How
Nobody can create a folder anywhere named "con"

This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable. .. At Microsoft the whole Team, couldn't answer why this happened!

Try it out yourself... Posted on Friday, December 1, 2006 1:22 PM General | Back to top

It's not a bug. CON is a reserved keyword. It's actually a device - the console. You can't create a folder called PRN, either, which is the reserved name for the default printer. It would be nice if Windows told you that, rather than just refusing to do anything, though.

True.
Try to open the console, and type "mkdir con" for example (without thr double quotes), and you'll get:
"The directory name is invalid.".
The message when you try to "rename" an existing folder is different BTW.
Typing "rename test con" in the console results in:
"A duplicate file name exists, or the file
cannot be found."
I think if you try it programmatically, it'll throw exception too, but I havenn't tried it.
I'd totally agree too that it should say anything when trying it in explorer, just like it does when the folder contains illegal characters.
Still, the question: How does it go for Vista? Does it say anything ?

It fails in Vista the same way.

I am going to have fun with our clients on this one.
"ParaPlan isn't working"
"Do you see a con folder on your desktop"
"No"
"Create that folder and call me back"

Good grief, this has only been this way since DOS1.0. CON, PRN, COM and 1 or 2 others that I can't remember. I don't know who you're asking at Microsoft, but they obviously have never used DOS. Has it been that long ago that we now have a non-dos generation.

Jay and Glenn -- I totally agree! This "trick" and others (like opening C:\Progra~1 to get to "Program Files") seem to surface every few years among the newer generation. How I miss the good ol' days when there were DOS apps written 100% in assembly, and they consumed only a few hundred K and actually performed pretty well. Those days are long gone, and only these little quirks are left to occasionally remind us of the past. Nowadays the online installer alone for most trial software is larger than the classic old-school WordPerfect, Lotus 1-2-3, and Norton Utilities combined. Aargh... I'm a dinosaur!
