I have talked before about situations in my life that have made me rethink the way I look at things in my job.  Well, it happened again today.

I was talking with a co-worker about astronomy and he started asking me a number of questions.  My initial reaction was "how can you not know that?".  It goes to show that we have to make sure we are not assuming what people know.  This could be when mentoring a developer or gathering requirements from a business partner.

Now this does have to be balanced.  You can get very annoying if you always treat people like you can't start a discussion without laying a foundation of knowledge.  You need to learn to read people.  If you find that you are getting blank stares from what you are saying then back up.

Maybe this can be one of those life lesson figures like they have in the TLC commercials. :)
